Scott Sossaman Celebrated for Selfless Service to the Nation and Local Community



    GILBERT, AZ, November 20, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Scott Sossaman served 28 years in the United States Army. Scott enlisted in the Arizona Army National Guard in 1983 as an artilleryman. After four years, he decided to finish his degree at Arizona State University and gain his commission through ROTC. Graduating in 1989 with a Bachelor of Science in History and a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the Field Artillery.

Mr. Sossaman saw service across the United States as well as overseas serving in the Persian Gulf War, twice in Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation Willing Spirit. His significant awards and decorations include four Bronze Star Medals, the Combat Action Badge, two Defense Meritorious Service Medals, two Presidential Unit Citations, and two Joint Meritorious Unit Awards.

During his time in service, Mr. Sossaman attended the Army's Command and General Staff College earning an advanced Additional Skill Identifier in Joint and Combined Planning and Operations. He attended this year long school while simultaneously getting a Master of Arts degree in Human Resource Development from Webster University. Other significant military duties included working at the US Joint Forces Command (later Joint Staff), J7 for Training and Doctrine as a member of the Deployable Training Team. Those duties involved world-wide travel to all US Combatant Commands and Joint Task Force (JTF) HQs as a training consultant in planning and operations. He also attended the Joint Forces Staff College in Suffolk, VA and was Adjunct Staff to the National Defense University and taught CAPSTONE, KEYSTONE, and PINNACLE courses to Flag and General Officers.

After retiring in 2013, Mr. Sossaman moved back to his native Arizona to give back to the communities he grew up in. Initially being a board-certified substitute K-12 teacher for Arizona State Preparatory Academy; volunteering at a local animal shelter and a volunteer at a physical therapy clinic for children with special needs as a hippotherapy horse handler. In 2015, Mr. Sossaman gave up teaching and volunteering at the animal shelter to concentrate on volunteering for a local veteran non-profit called Operation Freedom Bird where he now serves as a board member. In 2018, he assisted his brother and his brother's son-in-law in launching their custom grain cleaning and brokerage operation, Grain R&D, as a grain cleaning technician.

Today, Mr. Sossaman continues to work in helping to expand Grain R&D's operations in supplying local flour mills, craft breweries and distilleries with the finest Heritage Grains grown locally on Sossaman Farms. He also continues his work with hippotherapy, Operation Freedom Bird and vintage cars recently acquiring a 1932 Ford steel body Hi-Boy roadster.
