Dr. Travis-Johnson initially obtained a Bachelor of Arts in administration and legal processes with a concentration in economics from Mills College in Oakland, CA, in 1983. In 2007, she earned a Master of Business Administration in management from Walden University in Minneapolis, MN. Subsequently, Dr. Travis-Johnson graduated with a Doctorate of Business Administration in management with a concentration in leadership from Walden University in 2018.
Along with her present positions at VRM Mortgage Services, Dr. Travis-Johnson has also flourished as the co-founder of the Council for Inclusion in Financial Services in Plano, TX, in 2016. She was previously active as the director of REO Sales at Freddie Mac from 1998 to 2008 and the assistant vice president at World Savings from 1993 to 1998. Additionally, Dr. Travis-Johnson participates on the board of directors for PCV/VRM Seeds of Hops.
With her 30-year tenure within mortgage servicing, Dr. Travis-Johnson has received many accolades for her exemplary efforts. She was celebrated as a Top Mortgage Professional in 2016 and 2019, Housing Wire's 2016 Woman of Influence, and MReport's 2015 Leading Lady. In 2014 and 2015, she led VRM to be recognized by Diversity Business in multiple categories including Top African-American, Diversity-Owned and Minority-Owned Business. In addition to these acknowledgments, she accepted the Council for Inclusion in Financial Services Industry Impact Award in 2018, the Lead VRM Mortgage Services to receive four Housing Wire Pinnacle Awards in 2012, the Women in Default with a Leadership Award in 2011 and the Outstanding Leadership Award from VRM Mortage Services in 2010. Dr. Travis-Johnston has also been presented with several Freddie Mac Premier Achievement Awards between 1999 and 2008.
Dr. Travis-Johnson attributes her success to being a visionary and sharing her ideas with others. She was taught to tie herself to her vision so that anyone who wanted to utilize her ideas would have to take her along with them. Additionally, Dr. Travis-Johnson has been inspired by her mother, who held leadership positions in the banking industry.
Dr. Travis-Johnson ascended into her current positions by way of hard work and a little bit of luck. She held positions in college introducing her to the business world, and she was eventually selected for a scholarship which was accompanied with a opportunity to work in marketing. During this time, she learned different parts of the business and she genuinely enjoyed the work. Dr. Travis-Johnston decided to pursue a career in the field upon graduation and her career continued to take a natural progression in the years that followed.
Looking toward the future, Dr. Travis-Johnson hopes to be in a position of leadership and also express the importance of doing well in high school to students so they give themselves options for their futures. She also wants to teach young adults the importance of protecting their credit and saving money. Despite being very busy in her career, Dr. Travis-Johnson dedicates her time to causes for which she is passionate, including the National Diversity and Inclusion Council since 2013 and the Mortgage Bankers Association Diversity and Inclusion Committee from 2012-2019.
