Derek Winstanley Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. Derek Winstanley received an Alstead Geography Prize from Wigan Grammar School in Wigan, England.

An accomplished scientist whose career has seen him travel the world in numerous positions across England, Canada, Africa and the United States, Dr. Winstanley retired in 2008 with the distinguished title of a chief emeritus of the Illinois State Water Survey. Specializing in meteorology and climatology, he began his career at his alma mater, Oxford University, as a Radcliffe meteorological observer. He later garnered a laudable reputation as a meteorologist, climatologist and hydroclimatologist and eventually secured a position in the executive office of the president in Washington, D.C. as the director of the National Acid Precipitation Assessment Program in 1992 and as the deputy chief scientist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in D.C. in 1994. Concluding his career as the chief of the Illinois State Water Survey in Champaign, Dr. Winstanley contributed for 11 years in his role. Now a division of the Prairie Research Institute at the University of Illinois, the Water Survey's scientists conduct state-of-the-art research, collect, analyze, archive and disseminate high-quality, objective data and technical information.

Renowned for his work, Dr. Winstanley contributed to the advancement of the scientific understanding of the population dynamics of Desert Locusts in Africa and the Middle East and Palaearctic bird migrants in Africa and Europe. He also made great strides in the study of climate variability and change, climate models, hypoxia acid precipitation and surface waters and aquifers in the Midwest of the U.S. Additionally, Dr. Winstanley has conducted extensive research on the early railways in 1812, the influence of the West Indies slave trade on estate development in northern England and the influence on Gerrard Winstanley, a 17th century radical, of his hometown, Wigan, which was where Dr. Winstanley also grew up.

Among his numerous leadership roles within the community, Dr. Winstanley was active on the Federal Gulf Task Force Illinois River Coordination Council's science advisory committee in Springfield. He also chaired the Illinois Global Climate Change Work Group in Springfield, was a member of the Mahomet Aquifer Consortium in Champaign and is a member of the Krannert Art Museum Council in Urbana. Becoming fascinated by the prairies of North America and other parts of the world while in primary school, Dr. Winstanley's career was certainly influenced by his younger years. Attending Oxford University in England, he notably received Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees between 1966 and 1970. He has traveled extensively, visiting more than 90 countries.

Dr. Winstanley was runner up for the Henry Oliver Becket Memorial Prize by Oxford University in the school of geography. He also received an Alstead Geography Prize from Wigan Grammar School in Wigan, England. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Winstanley has been featured in the 56th through 58th editions of Who's Who in America and the 18th edition of Who's Who in the World.
