Dr. Preston is supported by an impressive educational background. He attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York and earned a Bachelor of Science in 1975. Five years later, he secured a Doctor of Philosophy from Princeton University and began his career as a researcher with the institution's physics department that year. In the summer of 1980 he joined the Theoretical Division of Los Alamos National Laboratory as a postdoctoral associate in the Elementary Particles and Field Theory group, and from 1983 to 1985 he was an assistant professor with the department of physics for the University of New Hampshire. During this time, Dr. Preston also served as a consultant for Los Alamos National Laboratory, and in the summer of 1985 assumed a permanent position at the Laboratory.
Throughout his career at Los Alamos National Laboratory since 1985, Dr. Preston has worked on the development of mathematical models of material behavior under extreme conditions. Between 1994 and 1998 he also contributed as a program manager and project leader for several different weapon-related programs at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. In 2000, he advanced to become the group leader of the Materials Science group with the Applied Physics Division, and in 2004 returned to materials modeling. While contributing as project leader for the Materials Project of the Advanced Simulation and Computing program from 2015 to 2017, he was elected a Fellow of Los Alamos National Laboratory.
Achievements to Dr. Preston's credit include authoring over 80 peer-reviewed publications on elementary particle theory, dislocation dynamics and high-rate material strength, solid-solid phase transformations, high-pressure melting and shear moduli, shock wave physics, and plasma theory. Additionally, he was responsible for developing the Preston-Tonks-Wallace material strength model which utilizes D.C. Wallace's theoretical work on overdriven shockwaves and D.L. Tonk's numerical results. The end result was a model that is applicable at strain rates from quasi-static to 1012 s-1, temperatures from zero to the melting temperature, and pressures from ambient to multi-megabar. In a career filled with highlights, he is proud to have been elected a Fellow of the American Physical Society in 2011. For his accomplishments in the field, Dr. Preston has been the recipient of four Defense Programs Awards of Excellence.
