Having accrued almost 40 years of professional experience, Mr. Perkins worked as a gas leakage engineer for Oklahoma Natural Gas from 1968 to 1994 before retiring in 1995. During this time, he excelled as the owner and operator of a janitorial business from 1975 to 1994. Previously, he was a service specialist for Muskogee Public Schools from 1957 to 1968. Currently, Mr. Perkins devotes his time and resources to directing the Paul Young Football League and serving as the chairman of the Muskogee Public Works and Finance Committee.
Prior to his professional career, Mr. Perkins pursued an education at Oklahoma State University, earning a Bachelor of Science in education in 1976. He completed additional coursework at Connors State University, from which he subsequently graduated in 1979 with a Bachelor of Science in education. He is certified in gas engineering and was one of the first African Americans to be hired by Oklahoma Natural Gas.

He was presented with the Community Children Foster Parent Award by the Department of Human Services in 1989. Mr. Perkins is most proud of being honored as one of the Five Who Care individuals by Station KOCO TV in 1987. Furthermore, he was recognized as Man of the Year by the Satoma Club and has been bestowed with a Spirt of Service Award.
