Mark L. Goldsmith is the founder, president and chief executive officer of Getting Out and Staying Out, a non-profit organization in New York City
NEW YORK, NY, November 25, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Mark L. Goldsmith with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Mr. Goldsmith celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Mr. Goldsmith is the founder, president and chief executive officer of Getting Out and Staying Out, a non-profit organization in New York City that emerged after being invited to visit the Horizon Academy at Rikers Island as a principal for the day in 2003. As a retired, successful business executive, he discussed with inmates various topics that were so well received that the Department of Corrections and the Department of Education invited him to return to meet with students on a regular basis. Deciding to take his initiative a step further, Mr. Goldsmith eventually formed Getting Out and Staying Out with a goal that was two-fold: to bring successful people to Rikers Island to coach young men and give them practical direction to build productive lives in mainstream society and to continue to coach and mentor them upon their return to their communities by providing them with the tools to get out and ultimately stay out.
Focusing on the individuals' capacities and strengths, as well as developmental needs and emotional well-being, Getting Out and Staying Out aims to promote personal, professional and intellectual growth through goal-oriented programming and comprehensive social support services. Establishing itself as one of the most effective reentry programs in the New York City area for justice-involved 16 to 24 year old men, fewer than 15% of participants return to jail, as compared to a national average of 67% for the age group. Now helping more than 1,500 young men each year, the organization has also become a leader in preventing justice-involvement by collaborating with community partners, public defenders and the courts to identify at-risk individuals who have had contact with the criminal justice system. Additionally, Getting Out and Staying Out has been instrumental in reducing recidivism and preventing justice-involvement by providing individual and group counseling, as well as coaching and advocacy, with the help of clinically masters of social work.
A retired cosmetic industry executive of 30 years, Mr. Goldsmith began his career with Revlon as a market manager and later served as executive vice president and general manager of Almay. He also served as president and chief executive officer of Inventory Management Systems in New York City, a bartering and trading company where he worked with top flight manufacturers to clean their inventory in exchange for media.
During his professional career, Mr. Goldsmith was a consultant and marketing chairman for the Cosmetic Curriculum Committee at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. As a result of his wealth of experience in his field, he has been working on publishing his first book, titled "How to Move from a Corporate Entrepreneur to a Social Entrepreneur: The Differences Between For-Profit and Not-for-Profit," which he hopes to release soon. In his local community, Mr. Goldsmith has lent his expertise as the chief development officer of Carnegie Hill Neighbors.
Raised in Johnstown, PA, Mr. Goldsmith attended New York University where he acquired a Bachelor of Arts in 1963. Two years later, he earned a Master of Business Administration at the City College of New York in 1964.
Mr. Goldsmith has been recognized for his commitment to helping young people stay out of the criminal justice system at Getting Out and Staying Out with the Encore.org Purpose Prize and a Richard Cornuelle Award for Social Entrepreneurship. In 2017, he was invited to attend the White House's Summit on Reentry Services where Getting Out and Staying Out was celebrated as a reentry program to be replicated throughout the country. In 2019, thanks to his testimony, Mr. Goldsmith was instrumental in the signing of the Criminal Justice Reform First Step Act by the president of the United States. Additionally, he was the recipient of a Social Entrepreneur of the Year Award from the Manhattan Institute in 2012 and received the Mutual of America Community National Partnership Award for GOSO. A celebrated Marquis listee, he has been cited in Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the East.
