Having accrued over 45 years of experience in the field of respiratory therapy, Mr. Salazar presently works as the president of E.J. Salazar & Associates, Inc., a company founded in 1982 to provide staffing services for local intensive care units, pediatric intensive care units, and newborn intensive care units. For a time this included both air and ground emergency transport. The company has gradually transitioned to distribution on behalf of medical equipment manufacturers, primarily cardiopulmonary equipment suppliers.
Mr. Salazar initially became certified to practice respiratory therapy in 1973 by the American Association of Respiratory Care, after which he graduated from Broward Community College with an Associate of Science in respiratory therapy technology. Gravitating toward respiratory therapy due to its wide versatility and the access it provided to several departments of medicine, he continued his formal training and testing, qualifying as a cardiopulmonary technologist in 1975. Shortly afterward, Mr. Salazar accepted his inaugural position in the field as the technical director of cardiopulmonary services at Northridge General Hospital in Fort Lauderdale.
Within a year, Mr. Salazar attained his credentials with certification as a registered respiratory therapist and a pulmonary function technologist by the National Board of Respiratory Therapy. Subsequently, he had established his eponymous company and began operating as a respiratory therapist and an instructor in pulmonary function technology for a number of clinics, institutions, and health care organizations throughout Florida. In his professional pursuits, Mr. Salazar is closely affiliated with many acute and sub-acute pediatric and adult care hospitals throughout Florida.
In later years, Mr. Salazar has become an outspoken activist against medical malpractice, particularly exemplified in the writing of "A Free Kill," which recounts the death of his 28-year-old son, Christopher, as the result of negligence in an intensive care unit. The book further details how the hospital in question shielded itself from legal repercussions via a statute known as "Sovereign Immunity" in Florida state law. To the same end, Mr. Salazar has served as a patient advocate for the Patient Safety Movement since 2014. In January 2015 Mr. Salazar was invited to speak at the Patient Safety Congress in Irvine, California, then again at the American Association for Respiratory Therapy Congress in 2018 in Las Vegas, Nevada regarding patient safety issues. In addition, Mr. Salazar has appeared on radio and TV shows in South Florida for the care of patients with chronic lung conditions as well as patient safety issues.
In accounting for his success, Mr. Salazar credits the work ethic instilled in him by his parents. He likewise draws inspiration from both his first and second wife, both of whom were passionate and driven nurses whom he believes have had a major role in inspiring him to succeed in his career.
Mr. Salazar's second wife Carol lost a long battle with cancer in April of 2016. Mr. Salazar is the proud father of four children, through whom he has had the joy of welcoming nine grandchildren into his immediate family.
In addition to being president of E.J. Salazar & Associates Inc. he also serves as president of Advanced Diagnostic Sleep Center CDE Inc. and VP of American Tele-Medicine Services Inc. He is on the advisory board for the Nova Southern University Department of Respiratory Therapy Technology and All County Health Care, Inc.
