ANN ARBOR, MI, November 27, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Stephen M. Modell, MD, MS with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Modell celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Modell has served 30 years as a health researcher and educator, offering leadership as the director of research dissemination at the Center for Public Health and Community Genomics since 2001. Located at the University of Michigan (U-M) in Ann Arbor, the Center promotes the integration of genomic discoveries into public health practice utilizing community input, with the goals of improving health and reducing or eliminating health conditions and disparities. Affiliated with U-M since 1987, Dr. Modell formerly served as the research director of genetics policy in the department of health management and policy. He also acted as a research associate on the Council on Genetics and Society, and the University's Genome Ethics Committee. Further appointments included research assistant in the department of psychiatry and assistant coordinator for the Resource for Public Health Policy at the School of Public Health. In the latter role, he linked organization activities and provided research support for publications on licit/illicit substance abuse prevention policy, and countering industry-led Tobacco Institute marketing efforts.

Dr. Modell has served as chief data analyst for numerous National Human Genome Research Institute- and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-funded projects, including "A New Genomic Framework for Schools and Communities" employing the Next Generation Science Standards; the "Midwest Community Genomics Forums"; "1st National GenoCommunity Think Tank"; "Research Community on Genetics and Racial/Ethnic Identity"; and "Communities of Color and Genetics Policy" Project. He co-created a seminal course in genetics and public policy in 1997. He has developed new evaluation methodology for community-based participatory research in the area of genetics and genomics, and published findings in numerous peer-reviewed journals on genetics, genetics policy, and public health.

Stephen Modell's interest in medicine was spurred by early exposure to the works of Wayne State University Professor Dr. John M. Dorsey, Sr. through his grandmother Miriam L. Hamburger, and a career-influencing epiphany experience while in college. An epidemiology clerkship at Medical College of Ohio and volunteering for his uncle Toby Citrin in public health cemented his final career decision. Career highlights have been collaborating with Dr. Rueben C. Warren, director of the National Center for Bioethics at Tuskegee in the wake of the historic presidential apology for the United States Public Health Service Syphilis Study taking place in that state, and serving as research head on the 5-state community genomics forums. Dr. Modell's career has been motivated by a strong desire to spread awareness of the deeper social and philosophical dimensions of health practice.

Stephen M. Modell has served as genome studies section editor for the peer-reviewed journal Ultimate Reality and Meaning: Interdisciplinary Studies in the Philosophy of Understanding (URAM) since 1995, and Journal co-editor since 1997. In 2015 he assembled and published URAM monograph #3, "Philosophical Studies in Medicine and Health" (University of Toronto Press). He was editor of URAM special issues "Studies in Unconventional Science" (2015); "Studies in Medicine and Health" (2006); and "Studies in Biophilosophy" (1997). He is part of the editorial board for Annals of Translational Medicine and Epidemiology.

Dr. Modell was principal author of the American Public Health Association policy statement "Advancing Cancer Genomics in Public Health" (2013). He is co-author of the chapter "Genetic Determinants of Health and Applications in Public Health and Preventive Medicine," reissue of Maxcy-Rosenau-Last, Public Health & Preventive Medicine. Stephen Modell is co-executive producer of a documentary film on the life and activism of women's health policy pioneer and Holocaust survivor Irene Butter, "Never a Bystander," directed by Evelyn Neuhaus. He has published an article on Bob Dylan's fit into the literature of peace and war, and pieces on Aristotelian influence in the formation of medical theory, and medicine through the lens of 20th century global literature.

Dr. Modell is a member and former chair and co-chair of the policy committee, Genomics Forum of the American Public Health Association. Additionally, he has been affiliated with the International Society of the Study of Human Ideas on Ultimate Reality and Meaning as treasurer, vice president, and president. Dr. Modell is professionally aligned with the American Medical Association, American Federation for Medical Research, Central Society for Clinical and Translational Research, the New York Academy of Sciences, and the Maimonides Society. He is an honorary member of Rotary International through which he was named a Paul Harris fellow in 2011. He is a volunteer mathematics instructor for the Ann Arbor Math Olympiad Club.
