Long eminent scholars academic chair, and the director of the Center of Civil Law Studies at Louisiana State University. Before immigrating to the United States in 2005, he was a professor of comparative law at the Jean Moulin University Lyon 3 from 2000 to 2005. Within that time, he also served as the director of the Édouard Lambert Institute of Comparative Law at the aforementioned university.
Prior to 2000, Dr. Moréteau held the posts of a professor of private law at Pierre Mendès-France University, now part of the Université Grenoble Alpes, an associate professor at the Jean Moulin University Lyon 3, an associate director for the Edouard Lambert Institute of Comparative Law at the Jean Moulin University Lyon 3, and a vice president of international relations at the Jean Moulin University Lyon 3. Additionally, he excelled with the same university in the positions of director of international relations for from 1993 to 1995 and a teaching and research assistant from 1982 to 1990. He has further found success as a visiting professor at the University of Melbourne, Boston University, and the University of Minnesota, among others.
Before embarking on his professional journey Dr. Moréteau pursued his studies at the Jean Moulin University Lyon 3, graduating with a Master's degree in comparative law in 1978. Continuing at the same academic institution, he received a Master's degree in French private law in 1981, before ultimately graduating, summa cum laude, with a Doctor of Philosophy in 1990. While preforming PhD research at Cambridge University, he met his wife, Marie A. Moréteau, whose patience and love has been a great inspiration to his life and career.
Notably, Dr. Moréteau has contributed articles to professional journals and excelled as the principal editor of "Comparative Legal History." In 2011, he published a touching tribute for the passing of his mentor, Dr. H.A. Schwarz-Liebermann von Wahlendorf. He has been presented with the John Ashby Hernandez III Memorial Francophone Leadership Award from the Louisiana State Bar Association in 2014 and was bestowed with the honor of The Ordre des Palmes Académiques by the French Republic. A highlight of his career, Dr. Moréteau was leader of a team tasked with translating the Louisiana Civil Code from English to French. The translation was published on line and in print and he presented it in April 2018 at the Louisiana Supreme Court in New Orleans to an audience of 100 attendees.
Outside of his immediate professional responsibilities, Dr. Moréteau is an active member of the American Law Institute, the European Centre of Tort and Insurance Law, the European Group on Tort Law, and the Louisiana Bar Foundation. He is the founder and president of Juris Diversitas, a group of comparative legal scholars with a booklist of 14 titles and several conferences.
