His research interests centered on glaucoma, the pathogenesis of optic nerve damage, clinical evaluation of the optic nerve and of visual fields, the role of pressure in "normal-tension glaucoma," and principles behind quantifying progression in cases of glaucoma. His laboratory research was supported in large part by the National Eye Institute and his clinical research by several foundations. Additional support came in the form of an endowed Chair named in his honor.
