Dr. Marriott is a state legislator and social worker with more than 50 years of distinguished service to her community and profession. Intending to become a physicist, she attended Morgan State College, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in 1964. Following the birth of her daughter, Dr. Marriott decided to refocus her career and enter education. She completed a Master of Social Work at the University of Maryland in 1972, and a Doctor in Social Work from Howard University in 1988.
From 1964 until 1965, Dr. Marriott was a teacher in Baltimore City Public Schools, during which she first discovered her passion for working with students in underserved areas. When she and her spouse relocated to New York in 1965, she became a social worker for New York City Social Services, where she remained through 1967. When Dr. Marriott returned to Baltimore in 1968, she continued her career in social work, joining the City Social Services until 1972.
Dr. Marriott was an assistant professor at Morgan State University in Baltimore from 1972 to 1996. In 1991, she was elected as a member of the Maryland General Assembly, and served until 2007, when she was appointed as the Deputy Mayor of Community and Human Development, an office she occupied until 2010. She subsequently found success as a consultant for the state of Maryland between 2010 and 2015. Dr. Marriott is proud to have built a career as an advocate for children and family development, including consulting for Baltimore City Head Start. She served as secretary of National Rainbow Coalition, and chair of the National Black Women's Health Project.
