Dr. Putnam is an educator and medical historian with more than 50 years of distinction in a variety of disciplines. She attended Reed College in Portland, Oregon, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1965 and a Master of Arts in Teaching in 1966. She later earned a Ph.D. in 1999 from Tufts University in Medford, with a focus on medical history and bioethics. The daughter of a country doctor, Dr. Putnam's initial interest in medical history came from a desire to archive her father's and mother's correspondence regarding his practice and life in a small New Hampshire town.
From 1965 to 1970, Dr. Putnam taught English, Latin, and German at Marshall High School and the Catlin Gabel School in Portland, Oregon. She taught Latin and English at the Gymnasium für Jungen und Mädchen in Duderstadt, Germany, in 1971, and English and pedagogy at the Pädagogische Hochschule Niedersachsen in Hildesheim from 1971 until 1973. In 1974, Dr. Putnam returned to the United States and became a foreign language textbook editor for Houghton Mifflin Company in Boston, where she remained until 1983, leaving her position as Executive Editor of the Foreign Language Department.
Dr. Putnam was an instructor at the Harvard University Center for Lifelong Learning between 1981 and 1989, and Director of the Graphic Arts Program at Northeastern University School of Continuing Education from 1983 to 1985. She worked as a freelance editor and as a consultant conducting workshops in editing and writing skills in a wide range of companies while beginning the work that led to her Ph.D. in medical ethics and the history of medicine. Dr. Putnam has taught as a visiting instructor at Tufts University's ExCollege, Simmons College in Boston, and Szent-György Medical University in Szeged, Hungary.
Dr. Putnam is the author of The Science We Have Loved and Taught (2004) and Hospice or Hemlock: Searching for Heroic Compassion (2002) and co-author of two other books. She has also published numerous journal articles, book chapters, and foreign-language educational resources. From 1983 to 2003, she wrote for newspapers throughout the New England region. She is happy to be writing and publishing well into her senior years. Dr. Putnam has received grants and awards for her scholarship, including a Research Fellowship and Travel Grant from the Wellcome Trust Centre for the History of Medicine (London) and a 2013 American Academy of Family Practice Foundation research fellowship. In 2005-06 she was named a Fulbright Senior Research Scholar for work she was undertaking in Budapest.
