Drawn to the social and political sciences while in high school, Dr. Perlstadt pursued a career in the field, beginning as an instructor of sociology with Michigan State University. Between 1868 and 2012, he ascended through the ranks to a full professor before taking on emeritus status in 2012.
During his decades long career with Michigan State University, Dr. Perlstadt also gained valuable expertise as a temporary lecturer in the department of hospital administration at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor's School of Public Health in 1980 and as a visiting associate professor in the department of health administration at the University of Oklahoma's College of Public Health in the early 1980s. Over the years, he also served as an adjunct associate professor with the University of Michigan Flint's School of Health Professions and Studies, an interim executive director of the Michigan Public Health Institute, and the director of the Program in Bioethics, Humanities and Society at Michigan State University. In a career filled with highlights, Dr. Perlstadt is especially proud of becoming a Fulbright lecturer on U.S. health care policy and politics at Semmelweis University in Budapest, Hungary.
Before obtaining his first position with Michigan State University, Dr. Perlstadt earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science from the University of Michigan in 1963, and spent four years on The Michigan Daily student newspaper. Subsequently, he graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy in sociology at the University of Chicago in 1973, and a Masters of Public Health at the University of Michigan's School of Public Health in 1979. A member of the American Sociological Association, Dr. Perlstadt has chaired the Sociological Practice Section and now the ASA Retirement Network Advisory Board. He has also been active on the Commission on the Accreditation of Programs in Applied and Clinical Sociology, the American Public Health Association's Science Board and Governing Council, and the American Lung Association's National Scientific Advisory Committee and National Board.
Throughout his career Dr. Perlstadt accrued more than $1.2 million in grants for such projects such as Comprehensive Community Health Models of Michigan through the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, where he evaluated three communities engaged in planning and implementing local level health care reform to improve their health care delivery system. Other public works projects to his credit include developing instruments for evaluation of safe & drug free school curricula for the Michigan Department of Community Health, as well as evaluating national environmental health polices and action plans for the World Health Organization/Europe. Along with other scholars in the field, Dr. Perlstadt has contributed to a plethora of published articles, such as "Presidential Longevity in Sub-Saharan Africa: Military Status, Ethnic Diversity and Presidential Order," "The Development of the Hill-Burton Legislation: Interest, Issues and Compromises," "Behavioral and Environmental Explanations of Elevated Blood Lead Levels in Immigrant Children and Children of Immigrants," and "Milgram's Obedience to Authority: Its Origins, Controversies, and Replications."
Due to his professor efforts in sociology and public health, Dr. Perlstadt was honored with the Advocate of the Year Award from the American Lung Association of Michigan in 1996, the American Sociological Association's Distinguished Career Award for the Practice of Sociology in 2014 and the Charles F. Kegley Diversity Award from the American Lung Association of the Midland States in 2019. A person with many areas of knowledge, he has been included in Marquis Who's Who in America, in World, in American Education, in Medicine and Health Care, and in Science and Engineering.
Looking towards the future, he intends to continue parlaying his knowledge to others in his role as professor emeritus. Additionally, Dr. Perlstadt will be assembling a book on research ethics
