Now a Professor Emeritus, Dr. Anderson taught in the Aerospace Engineering Department at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor for 35 years before retiring in 2000. During his career on campus, he conducted research on structural dynamics and optimization, chaired the Computer Aided Design Program and the Engineering College Admissions Committee and served on the Engineering College Executive Committee. Among 18 doctoral students, Dr. Anderson was the chairperson for 12 and the co-chairperson for six of their dissertations. Additionally, he founded two successful companies: Automated Analysis Corporation, which was an engineering consulting company that boasted some 300 employees, and Online Training Corporation, a multimedia training company with a dominant patent on desktop publishing.
Dr. Anderson's early research was focused on supersonic panel flutter. He later studied optimization, using nonlinear programming methods. One of his favorite research projects, notably, included participating in the NASA High Altitude Balloon Program. In 1993, Dr. Anderson also authored a CD-ROM lecture series titled "Linear, Static Finite Element Analysis."
Studying aeronautics because he was attracted to the technology aspect of the field, Dr. Anderson obtained a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in Aeronautical Engineering at Iowa State University (ISU) in 1957 and 1958, respectively. He later acquired a Doctor of Philosophy in Aeronautics at the California Institute of Technology in 1963 and became a Registered Professional Engineer in Michigan. He also played freshman basketball and baseball and varsity baseball at ISU.
To stay up-to-date in his field, Dr. Anderson remains a member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. He is also a member of Tau Beta Pi. While in college, Dr. Anderson served as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force between 1962 and 1965, during which time he was a research engineer at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio.

He later received a Standard Oil Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching by the University of Michigan in 1968 and was honored as an Outstanding Alumnus by Iowa State University in 1983.
