Moreover, her artwork was featured in numerous publications throughout the American south, such as Atlanta Art Papers, the Artists and Critics Forum, and have been the topic of papers presented at Emory University's Southern Experiment, the Southeastern College Art Association, and the American Cultural Society. Throughout the course of her career in art and education, Ms. McCune worked tirelessly to advance her own grasp of art. She matriculated at the University of Tennessee, from which she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1974, after which she undertook postgraduate studies between 1974 and 1977. During this time, she worked diligently in the vicinity of Morristown, Tennessee, serving as an assistant professor of art at Walters State Community College, a display designer at the Laminate-Laminall Corp., interviewer for WSJK-TV, and the co-owner of the Upstairs Gallery, among other positions.
Since concluding her academic efforts with a Master of Fine Arts from the University of South Carolina in 1982, where she excelled as a teaching assistant, Ms. McCune worked as the director of a Summer Art Series for Youth in Tryon, North Carolina, from 1987 until 1989, and as an artist-in-residence for the Tennessee and South Carolina Arts Commissions. In light of her outstanding accomplishments as an educator, she has been named as Greenville Technical College's Professor of the Year. She has also been the recipient of the South Carolina Governors Award for Distinguished Professorship, the Carl Blair Award for Commitment to Arts Education in 2019, and the National NISOD Award bestowed to her at the University of Texas.
In civic affairs, Ms. McCune has worked as a teacher at the Taylors First Baptist Church since 1988, and was an active member of the Parent-Teacher Association board for the Buena Vista Elementary School. She has likewise been a member and supporter of various art associations such as the National and Georgia Women's Caucus for the arts, or South Carolina Committee for the New Art Examiner in Chicago, and the chairperson for several exhibition committees for the Allendale County Arts Council and the Morristown Chamber of Commerce. She has considered it an extreme honor to hold membership or chairmanship on numerous other committees wherever she has lived or taught. Ms. McCune has also served on state and regional art boards, such as the Tri-State Sculptors Educational Association, the Visual and Environmental Design Panel for the Tennessee Arts Commission, and was a founding member of the Mountain Makins Festival, which has been listed four times over as a top 20 event by the Southeast Tourism Society.
Ms. McCune first became involved in her profession due to the influence of a fourth grade teacher, who told her that she had talent and could be an artist. Never believing she would teach, she found herself inspired by watching how well her students performed during her art residency in Tennessee, and resolved to carry on. Adjacent to her career and her passion, Ms. McCune indulges in such diversions as traveling, visiting museums and antique shows.
