Prior to her retirement, she garnered a laudable reputation as a professor with the school between 1992 and 2018, having been an associate professor in the School of Natural Resources since 1975, and an assistant professor since 1972. Earlier in her career, Dr. Low found success as a research scientist with the Australian Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organizations from 1967 to 1972.
Dr. Low first pursued an education with the University of Louisville, where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts, with honors, in 1960. She subsequently matriculated at the University of Texas, receiving a Master of Arts in 1962. She continued her studies with the school, earning a Doctor of Philosophy in 1965. Dr. Low next completed postdoctoral work at the University of British Columbia from 1965 to 1967.
A respected voice in her areas of interest, Dr. Low has been affiliated with a number of professional organizations. She is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Society of Naturalists, the American Institute of Biological Sciences, Sigma Xi, and Phi Kappa Phi. Dr. Low is the former president and secretary of the Human Behavior and Evolution Society. In addition, she has served on the boards of Knight-Wallace Journalism Fellows and Human Relations Area Files.
Throughout her career, Dr. Low has been recognized for her contributions, including the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Human Behavior and Evolution Society. She was also given the University of Michigan Outstanding Doctoral Mentorship Award and the State of Michigan Outstanding Teaching Award. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Low has been featured in multiple editions of Who's Who of American Women.
