Dr. Campbell is renowned as a soil physicist with more than 45 years of experience in his field. He initially pursued an education at Utah State University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in physics in 1965. Attributing a class taught by professor Sterling Taylor as the genesis of his interest in soils, he returned to Utah State University to work in Dr. Taylor's laboratory, and obtained a Master of Science in soil physics in 1966. Dr. Campbell concluded his academic efforts with a Doctor of Philosophy in soils at Washington State University in 1968.
From 1969 to 1971, Dr. Campbell served his country to the rank of captain in the United States Army. Upon his return to civilian life in 1971, he began his career as an assistant professor of soils at Washington State University, later finding success as an associate professor from 1975 to 1980 and a professor from 1980 to 1998. Since 1998, Dr. Campbell has excelled as a senior scientist for METER Group in Pullman, WA, a working group which aims to develop research instrumentation and make it accessible to other scientists.
Dr. Campbell is the author of "Introduction to Environmental Biophysics," which was published in 1977 with a second edition in 1998. A contributor to numerous articles published in professional journals, he holds a patent for a krypton hygrometer. A former National Science Foundation fellow, he was recognized as a senior visiting fellow of the British Scientific Research Council in Nottingham, England, and a visiting professor to the University of Nottingham. Likewise, Dr. Campbell is a fellow of the American Society for Agronomy and the Soil Society of America.
