Since she was 13 years old, Ms. Borges aspired to be a lawyer but her education took her in a different direction. In college, while majoring in modern foreign languages, education and music, she worked as a legal secretary. After earning her Bachelor of Arts from Mercy College in 1972, she pursued her original objective under the tutelage of Jules Teitelbaum. In 1979, without attending law school, she was admitted to practice law in the State of New York and became an associate with the firm, which eventually evolved into Jules Teitelbaum, PC., in which she was a partner. In 1989, she co-founded Teitelbaum, Braverman & Borges, P.C. Since 2000, as a member of Borges & Associates, LLC, she has concentrated her practice on various aspects of bankruptcy and commercial law. An expert in her field, Ms. Borges shares her considerable knowledge with others by presenting educational programs for numerous professional organizations, including the National Association of Credit Management, RiemerPlus Cantalupo & Sherman, Federation of Credit, the State Bar of Georgia, and the New York County Lawyers Association, to name a few.
In addition to New York, Ms. Borges is admitted to practice law in the United States District Courts for the Eastern, Western, Northern and Southern Districts of New York, the District of Connecticut, the Eastern District of Michigan, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and the Supreme Court of the United States. Ms. Borges retains her professional affiliation with the American Bar Association, the American Bankruptcy Institute, the Commercial Law League of America and the International Association of Commercial Collectors.
With a plethora of knowledge at her disposal, Ms. Borges has published numerous articles in professional journals, both nationally and internationally, including "Hidden Liens: Who is Entitled to What" in the Commercial Law Journal, "Capsized Businesses: Don't Be Swamped by Bankruptcy" in the Broadcast Cable Financial Journal, "Consignment Agreements Under Fire: If Not Done Right, You Can Get Burned" in the NACM's Business Credit Magazine and "Uniform Voidable Transactions Act (US)" in Insolvency Intelligence in the UK. For her considerable efforts in law, she has been honored with the Human Valor Award in Law and Arts and several awards through Mercy College, including the Professional Achievement Award and the Trustee's Medal. Ms. Borges received a Career Achievement Award from the Broadcast Cable Credit Association and the Strength in Numbers Recognition Certificate from the National Association of Credit Management.
Listed among the Top 25 Most Influential Collection Professionals through Collection Advisor Magazine, Ms. Borges more recently received the Robert P. Caine Award for Leadership from the Commercial Law League of America, and a Woman of Distinction Award from St. Catharine Academy. She has been recognized as a New York Super Lawyer since 2009. Professional publications such as Who's Who of American Women have also recognized Ms. Borges for her outstanding legal work.
Devoted to her community, Ms. Borges has volunteered her time and resources extensively at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, as the youth music ministry director, cantor and lector. She attributes her success to two mottos; "Consumed in service," and "Ever upward and onward, but only step by step" which have guided her life. In the coming years, Ms. Borges intends to continue to grow her practice, while remaining open to new opportunities.
