During her youth in Victoria, B.C., Ms. Hoen was very involved in the arts: ballet, piano, completing the 10th grade Toronto Conservatory, and choral singing. She also sang lead roles in 2 school musicals. After graduation at UBC, she worked as a biomedical librarian there and in Montreal at the Royal Victoria Hospital as well. Before leaving Canada for Tripoli, Libya in 1962 with her husband, Dr. Hoen, and 2 babies, Ms. Hoen taught at the South Peace High School in Dawson Creek, B.C. She became Assistant to the Manager of Occidental Petroleum during several years in North Africa where their third daughter was born. The family moved to California where Ms. Hoen acquired an MBA and became a petroleum economist with Occidental. In Oklahoma, she was a financial analyst then Manager of Gas Contracts for Grace Petroleum before "hitting the glass ceiling" for a V.P. position and left to begin studies at Oklahoma City University Law School in 1978. Ms. Hoen enjoyed more than twenty years in the field of law. A citizen of Canada, and later dual citizen, she practiced law in the US, beginning as a law clerk for oil and gas attorneys Andrews, Davis, Legg, Bixler, Milsten, & Murrah, of Oklahoma City. She later became the vice president, land and general counsel as part of Hoen Exploration Company, worked as partner and consultant with Gooderham, Hoen and Associates in Fort Myers, Florida consulting with beach communities on behalf of the Florida Shore and Beach Preservation Association. Subsequently, she was a partner and co-manager of Workman and Hoen P.A. on Sanibel, Florida covering Wills and Trusts and Real Estate disputes.
Now an award-winning artist, Ms. Hoen, who began painting as a young girl, would often use watercolor. Today, her paintings have evolved ever further. Painting in impressionist, expressionist and abstract styles with acrylics since 2001, she uses' tertiary colors to create landscapes and expressionist figures. Ms. Hoen's work as a colorist has been inspired by visits to Monet's home in Giverny, France, other European travels, the Gulf islands in British Columbia and the Everglades, Corkscrew Swamp, Six Mile Cypress, and Sanibel and Captiva Islands in Southwest Florida.
Ms. Hoen has been equally inspired by her art teacher, Gale Bennett, with whom she traveled to France for annual art classes, as well as her mentor, Valerie Metz, an artist based in Vancouver. Her artwork is currently on display at the Tower Gallery in Sanibel, FL and the Salt Spring Is. Gallery in B.C. where she was the founding member in 2009.
Since embarking upon her career, Ms. Hoen has been active with numerous civic organizations. She was a member of the Edmond Chamber of Commerce and a former commissioner of the Edmond Arts and Humanities Council in Oklahoma. She has served as president of the Concerned Citizens on Captiva, FL and was on the advanced board of the Lee County Parks and Recreation in Florida. Among other roles, Ms. Hoen has contributed as legislative chairman for the Women's Political Caucus and 3 year board member of the Abuse Counseling and Treatment Center in Fort Myers. As president of the Sanibel Captiva chapter, she served Zonta, a worldwide organization in 60 countries dedicated to empowering women in education, health, law, finance and self-sufficiency.
An alumnus of the University of British Columbia, Ms. Hoen received a Bachelor of Arts in 1957. She later acquired a Master of Business Administration at California State University in 1975 and a Doctor of Jurisprudence at Oklahoma City University in 1981. Ms. Hoen was notably only one of 11 women selected to participate in the law program. She has been admitted to the Oklahoma Bar Association, the Middle District of the U.S. District Court Florida and the Western District of the U.S. District Court of Oklahoma and is a certified mediator in the state of Florida. To remain aware of developments in her field, she has been a member of numerous law-related organizations, including the American Bar Association, the International Bar Association, the Florida Bar Association, and the Federation of Canadian Artists.
The recipient of several awards during her career in law, Ms. Hoen was first honored with a Bancroft-Whitney Award from the Lawyer's Cooperative Publishing Company in 1979. She then received an American Jurisprudence Award in 1980 and an Equal Rights Amendment Award in 1981. The Captiva Erosion Prevention District gave her an Award for eight years of Service including Chairman in 1994. Ms. Hoen also won the coveted New Artist of the Year Award for Lee County in Fort Myers at the 2007 Angels of the Arts Awards. She was one of 11 artists nominated. A celebrated Marquis listee, Ms. Hoen has been featured in Who's Who in American Law, Who's Who in the South and Southeast, Who's Who in the World, and Who's Who of American Women.
