Mr. Kurtz is widely regarded as one of the top strength and conditioning professionals in the country and he has assisted the National Football League, USA Basketball, USA Football and Nike Football on long term athletic development education. Moreover, Mr. Kurtz is a sought after speaker at strength and fitness conferences across the country and has presented lectures in China, Hong Kong, the United Kingdom and Mexico.
Mr. Kurtz was named the National Strength & Conditioning Association's National Coach of the Year in 2016. He has also been honored as a 2018 Top 40 Under 40 Sports Professional by Coach and Athletic Director Magazine and a 2017 Top 20 Under 40 Young Leader in South Carolina. Additionally, he was recognized as the South Carolina Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Year by the South Carolina Coaches Association in 2013 and 2014.
After graduating from the University of South Carolina in 2008 with a Master of Science in Sports and Entertainment Business Management, Mr. Kurtz found his niche as a strength & conditioning specialist after originally receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education. In 2018, Mr. Kurtz was named the Assistant Athletics Director and Director of Sports Performance at Windermere Preparatory School. In this position he has developed a comprehensive school wide strength and conditioning program and created a school wide culture of vitality and fitness which includes not only students, but also the faculty, staff, parents and community. In 2018, the school received the National Strength and Conditioning Association's Strength of America Award. This award recognizes high schools that represent the gold standard in strength and conditioning programs and Windermere Prep is one of only two schools in Florida that have this honor. High schools who earn this award have demonstrated excellence in supervision, education, program, and facilities.
Furthermore, Mr. Kurtz serves as the strength and conditioning consultant coach to the nine-time high school basketball champion Oak Hill Academy in Virginia since 2010. During his time there he has worked with numerous current and former NBA players including Quinn Cook, Keldon Johnson and Dwayne Bacon.
Previously, Mr. Kurtz was the Director of Strength and Conditioning at AC Flora High School (Forest Acres, South Carolina). During his time there, AC Flora won 16 state championships and the athletic program was twice named the state's program of the year.
Mr. Kurtz is a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association and the National High School Strength Coaches Association. He has served as the state director for both organizations. Additionally, he is on the Advisory Board for Keiser University's Exercise Science, Sports Medicine and Fitness Technology Program and has served as a subject matter expert for the National Strength and Conditioning Association.
Mr. Kurtz is the president of The Athlete Maker Sports Performance and Fitness Training, and has also served as the director of strength and athletic development for The Swingman Baseball Club. Previously, he worked as a graduate assistant strength and conditioning coach at the University of South Carolina from 2007 to 2008.
Sports have been a part of Mr. Kurtz' life from a young age and he is passionate that there is no better place to equip young people with the tools to be successful in life than through athletics and training in the weight room.
Because of that belief, Mr. Kurtz has lofty plans to create and run his own school, the goal of which would be innovatively catering to each individual students' passions and needs. He aspires to find better models and curriculums to teach middle and high school students how to pursue what they are passionate about and how to leverage this competency in a way that will enable them to maximize their potential in whatever they are passionate about. Mr. Kurtz wants to teach his students to independently think outside the box and examine themselves. Currently, Coach Kurtz uses his platform as a strength & conditioning coach to teach his students and athletes how to lead more productive and goal oriented lives as well as how to become leaders in their sport, the classroom and in society.
