Now a retired educator, Dr. Twale began her professional journey at Geneva College where she received a BA in social science in 1973. She taught college prep economics at her alma mater, Elizabeth-Forward Senior High the following year. She pursued an MA in sociology at Duquesne University graduating in 1976. For the next few years, she instructed students at the Community College of Allegheny County, Penn State-Greater Allegheny Campus, and Geneva College. Dr. Twale concluded her academic program obtaining another MA in sociology in 1980 and a PhD in higher education administration in 1985 from the University of Pittsburgh. After teaching a year at Pitt, she accepted a tenure track assistant professor position at Auburn University. Serving as a graduate program coordinator, she gained tenure and associate professor and eventually obtained full professor in 1998. Then she moved to the University of Dayton in the same rank, status, and administrative capacity. During these years she sat on various departmental, college, and university committees and chaired numerous masters' theses and doctoral dissertations. She co-authored articles with her students and shepherded them to various conferences where they could present their research. As a consultant, Dr. Twale worked with the Union Institute and University in 2008 to prepare their distance learning EdD in higher education administration. She consulted and presented workshops at universities in Canada and Texas. Moving back home to the Pittsburgh area in 2008, she semi-retired and worked as an adjunct professor at Pitt teaching graduate courses in higher education administration both on campus and online until her full retirement in 2016.

Throughout her teaching career, Dr. Twale conducted research for publication and presentation. With 55 published scholarly articles to her credit, she wrote several book chapters; a co-authored monograph on graduate student socialization; a co-authored book on faculty incivility; and three singularly authored books on faculty and graduate students and a broader look at the academic bully culture. In 2008 Dr. Twale released "Faculty Incivility: The Rise of the Academic Bully Culture and What to do about it," a career highlight for her. The book specifically addressed the prevalence of faculty bullying faculty, that is, camouflaged aggression among colleagues, and how this leads to an ingrained academic bully culture. Following "Socialization of Graduate and Professional Students in Higher Education: A Perilous Passage" with John Weidman in 2001 and "Faculty Incivility" with Barbara De Luca in 2008, she authored "A Faculty Guide for Succeeding in Academe" in 2013, and " A Faculty Guide for Supervising and Advising Graduate Students" in 2014. Her most recent title, "Understanding and Preventing Faculty-on-Faculty Bullying: A Psych-Social-Organizational Approach" came out in 2017. The text provided a comprehensive understanding of workplace harassment, aggression, violence, bullying, and incivility in academe, specifically. Using psychological, social, and organizational lenses, it explores these issues from the perspective of the individual faculty victim and instigator; the department culture and its response; and the college/university organizational culture, prevention, and adjudication suggestions. Though not published works, Dr. Twale wrote over 100 devotionals used for group discussion purposes by women at her church.

With over 75 conference presentations, Dr. Twale joined and attended various professional organizations such as the American Educational Research Association, the National Association of Student Personal Administrators, the Association for the Study of Higher Education, University Council for Educational Administration, the Eastern Educational Research Association, the Midwestern Education Research Association, the Southern Regional Council on Educational Administration, and the Southern Association for College Student Affairs. She served as a board member for the Eastern Educational Research Association and as the editor of their professional journal, the Journal of Research in Education from 2004-2008.

Deeply invested in her community, Dr. Twale served as president and vice-president from 2003-2005 of the Mon-Yough Trail Council, a subgroup of the Great Allegheny Passage. She served as administrative council chair at her church in 2009. Currently, she serves as secretary to the Elizabeth Forward Alumni and Friends Association as well as the Elizabeth Forward Student Aid Fund. These organizations distribute competitive scholarship monies to graduating high school seniors and returning alumni seeking assistance with post-secondary education costs. An avid sewer, she crocheted prayer shawls for nursing home seniors and countless fleece blankets for children in local hospitals.

In 2015 the Elizabeth Forward Alumni and Friends Association inducted Dr. Twale in their Alumni Hall of Fame for her achievements in the field of education. She previously received a First Place Prize for a paper competition from the National Association for Campus Activities in 1984 and a President's Award for Outstanding Education Research Paper by the Eastern Education Research Association in 1994. She also secured several research grants between 1984 and 2002.
