In his retirement, he has served as a professor with Lehigh in Prague from 2000 to 2015 and the director of the Office of Fellowship Advising from 2011 to 2013. He previously held a number of positions with Lehigh University, including as a distinguished service professor from 1995 to 2004, an executive director of the Iacocca Institute from 1992 to 1995, an Iacocca professor of business from 1992 to 1993, and both a dean and professor from 1978 to 1992. Excelling at Northwestern University as an associate dean from 1972 to 1978, an associate professor from 1969 to 1978, and both an instructor and assistant professor from 1962 to 1969, Dr. Barsness began his career as a budget analyst with the U.S. Bureau of the Budget from 1960 to 1961.
Dr. Barsness initially pursued an education with the University of Minnesota, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in 1957. He continued his studies with the aforementioned school, earning a Master of Arts in history in 1958 and a Master of Public Administration in 1960. Dr. Barsness concluded his academic efforts, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy in American economic history in 1963.
A respected voice in his areas of interest, Dr. Barsness has been affiliated with a number of professional organizations. He is a member of the Academy of International Business, the International Association for Business and Society and the Business History Conference. Dr. Barsness has also been active with the Transportation Research Forum, the Academy of Management, Phi Beta Kappa, and Beta Gamma Sigma.
Throughout his career, Dr. Barsness has been celebrated for his contributions to the field. He was notably presented with the R.R. and E.C. Hillman Award from Lehigh University. Likewise, Dr. Barsness has been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in Finance and Business, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the East, and Who's Who in the World.
