Aligned with Wright State University (WSU) in Dayton for the past 22 years, Dr. Mukhopadhyay is a professor of materials science and engineering and the director of the National Academies-Grand Challengers Scholars and the Center for Nanoscale Multifunctional Materials. During 2016 and 2017, she was also a Jefferson science fellow through the National Academies of Science Engineering and Medicine. Serving as a senior scientific officer in the Bureau of Economic and Business Affairs, Dr. Mukhopadhyay was responsible for creating connections between cutting-edge innovations and governmental entities that focused on economic development.
Pursuing an academic career which has focused on nanotechnology, sustainable engineering devices and forward-thinking STEM education, some of Dr. Mukhopadhyay's achievements have included the development of multi-scale hierarchical structures suitable for environmental purification, charge storage, thermal management, catalysis, sensing and bio-scaffolding. She has worked extensively with thin film techniques, including the fabrication of superconducting oxides from nanoparticles, and has conducted research in the modification of interfaces using plasma, in surface activity measurements using XPS and in modification of nanostructural materials. Some of Dr. Mukhopadhyay's more recent projects have notably included the design of compact and reusable nanomaterial architectures for energy, environment and biomedical applications, the fundamental investigation of surface and interface phenomena and the promotion of multidisciplinary engineering education models. Much of her work has been funded through grants from such federal and state sponsors as the National Science Foundation, the Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency and industrial sponsors like Proctor and Gamble.
As a result of her research, Dr. Mukhopadhyay has been widely published, having contributed more than 100 articles to professional journals, as well as books, chapters and reports. She has been featured in over a dozen media releases in such publications as the Dayton Daily News and the Homeland Security News Wire. Further, Dr. Mukhopadhyay has been active by organizing numerous national and international symposia.
An alumnus of Indian Institute of Technology, Dr. Mukhopadhyay received a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in solid state physics. She subsequently attended Cornell University, where she acquired a Doctor of Philosophy in materials science and engineering. An elected fellow of the American Ceramic Society since 2005, Dr. Mukhopadhyay is past chair of their electronics division, and is also an executive committee member of the Dayton chapter of the American Society for Metals International since 1998.
Dr. Mukhopadhyay received several recognitions from WSU as a faculty member, including a 2011 Outstanding Faculty Award and Trustees' Award for Faculty Excellence and a 2005 Excellence in Research Award. She received several scholarship and awards as well, including a Merit scholarship from Indian Institute of Technology in 1981 and national ranking in Indian School Certificate examination.
