With more than 30 years of research and teaching experience under his belt, Dr. Watanabe's achievements include research in nuclear fission and fusion systems for terrestrial and space applications, non-equilibrium statistical mechanics and medical physics. He graduated from the University of Tokyo in 1978 with a Bachelor of Science. In 1980 he graduated from the University of Tsukuba with a Master of Science and then emigrated from Japan to the United States. In the United States, Dr. Watanabe graduated with a Master of Science in 1982 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1984 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Dr. Watanabe has been a professor at the University of Minnesota since 2010, and previously garnered a laudable reputation as an associate professor of medical physics at the university from 2005 to 2010. From 1998 to 2005, he excelled as an assistant professor of medical physics at Columbia University in New York City. Before he was a professor, Dr. Watanabe maintained strenuous activity in research. From 1994 to 1998 he was a fellow at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City and flourished as a research scientist at the University of Florida from 1989 to 1993. He previously worked as an associate development engineer at the University of California Los Angeles from 1987 to 1989, and before that was a research associate at the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1984 to 1986.
On top of Dr. Watanabe's outstanding career in research and education, he is also a contributor to more than 100 articles to professional publications and is certified in radiation therapy by the American Board of Radiology. He is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Association of Physicists in Medicine, the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics and Sigma Xi, an honor society for scientists and engineers. In his free time, Dr. Watanabe enjoys such diversions as music, reading and walking.
