Welch Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Texas at Arlington. Previously, Dr. Armstrong met with success as a P.W. West lectureship at Louisiana State University, Caldwell Professor of chemistry at Iowa State University, head of the analytical chemistry department at the University of Missouri, Professor at Texas Tech University, Georgetown University and at Bowdoin College. With a strong reputation of excellence, Dr. Armstrong has been afforded many opportunities to share his top skills in career-related projects. He was a member of the board of directors for Advanced Separations Technologies, lecturer for Millsaps College, and R.A. Welch lecturer and Dow lecturer for Columbia University.
Dr. Armstrong's portfolio of work includes patents in the field, as well as numerous awards for his research. Notably, he was the recipient of five Teaching Excellence Awards from the University of Missouri, the Martin Medal, the International Chirality Medal, an EAS Chromatography Award, an Isco Award, a Presidential Award, and a Perkin Elmer Award. Additionally, Dr. Armstrong was honored with an R&D 100 Award from R&D Magazine, a Benedetti-Pichler Award from the American Microchemistry Society, a Helen M. Free Award from the American Chemical Society and a Separation Science & Technology Award (as well as other ACS Awards). The Analytical Scientist Magazine named him one of the "Top Ten" analytical scientists, "Top Ten" mentors and "Top Ten" separation scientists in the world. He was just awarded the LCGC Magazine's 2020 Lifetime Achievement Award. He was named a Distinguished Scholar by Hope College and a Distinguished Record Researcher by the University of Texas. Dr. Armstrong has been able to further his research through a number of research grants from the Research Corporation, the Petroleum Research Fund, the National Institutes of Health and Whatman Corporation.
To prepare for a career in the field of chemistry and research, Dr. Armstrong pursued and completed his education. He earned a Bachelor of Science from Washington and Lee University in 1972. Thereafter, he attended the Texas Agricultural and Mechanical University, where he achieved a Master of Science in chemical oceanography in 1974 and Doctor of Philosophy in chemistry in 1977. He has remained involved in his industry though his memberships with the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists, the American Chemical Society, the Royal Society of Chemistry, Sigma Xi and Phi Lambda Upsilon.
