Supported by more than 30 years of practiced excellence in both archaeology and anthropology, Dr. Simon currently serves as an independent consultant focusing on applied anthropology in the area of natural resources management, inter¬tribal organizational capacity building, and incorporation of indigenous knowledge into fish and wildlife management. Periodically since 2002, he works as an adjunct instructor at the University of Alaska Fairbanks departments of Anthropology, Alaska Native Studies and Rural Development, and the Tribal Management program. Initially interested in bioarchaeology, he transitioned to social cultural anthropology after studying mortuary practices and treatment of the dead for his master's degree at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Prior to his current role, he served as the regional supervisor for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game's Division of Subsistence for Arctic, Interior, and Western Alaska in Fairbanks from 2002 to 2017. In that capacity, he built and supervised a team of more than two dozen social scientists to conduct research and regulatory support activities regarding customary and traditional uses of fish and wildlife in the northern two-thirds of Alaska to support state and federal subsistence priority laws. He also served as vice chairman of the Arctic-Yukon-Kuskokwim Sustainable Salmon Initiative from 2003 to20I0, and 2011-2017. Prior to his 14 years of work at ADF&G, Dr. Simon worked as an applied anthropologist at the Tanana Chiefs Conference, Inc., in Fairbanks from 1999 to 2002, an associate anthropologist-archaeologist at Northern Land Use Research, Inc., in Fairbanks from 1995 to 1998, and an archaeologist with the U.S. National Park Service in Nome, Alaska, in 1990. Dr. Simon commenced his career as an archeological technician and field supervisor at Archeological and Historical Consultants, Inc., in Centre Hall, Pennsylvania, 1987 to 1989, where he worked on 16 different research projects.
Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Simon pursued a formal education at Pennsylvania State University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1989. Relocating back to Alaska, he received a Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees from the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 1991 and 1998, respectively. Alongside his primary career endeavors, he has served as the vice president and a Fire Service Area commissioner of Chena-Goldstream Fire and Rescue, Inc., in Fairbanks from 1993 to 2013 and was the founding president of KDQ & Co., Inc., in Fairbanks. Civically involved as well, Dr. Simon is a past vice president of Interior AIDS Association and master counselor of the Order of DeMolay.
Dr. Simon is also a published author, having written a chapter in the book "Reckoning with the Dead," published by the Smithsonian Institution Press, articles in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings, and numerous technical reports in the Alaska Department of Fish and Game technical paper series. Maintaining affiliation with numerous organizations throughout his career, he continues to serve as a fellow of the Society for Applied Anthropology and a member ofthe Alaska Anthropological Association.
As a testament to his success, Dr. Simon has received numerous research grants from various organizations, including small research grants from the University Museum of the North's Geist Fund between 1990 and 1996 and large research grants from the State of Alaska coastal management program, Alaska Legislature, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. However, he notes his greatest career achievements to have been retiring from governmental service work to become a private consultant and working for various tribal organizations, including; the Ahtna Intertribal Resource Commission, the Kuskokwim River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission, and the Tanana Chiefs Conference's Hunting and Fishing Task Force. Dr. Simon is also proud of his 14-year tenure as a regional supervisor at the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.
