Mr. Meehan celebrates a successful career as an attorney for more than 40 years, having served as a partner in association with Meehan Law, LLC, since 1975. Specializing in criminal, and malpractice law, he originally worked alongside his father, Richard T. Meehan Sr., who became a highly respected attorney and judge after serving as a Bridgeport police officer. Continuing the family practice, Mr. Meehan has since partnered with his own son, Michael T. Meehan, a skilled litigator who has been practicing for more than 20 years in matrimonial law, and is now joined by his younger sson, R.J. Meehan.
As the managing partner in the firm's Bridgeport office, Mr. Meehan focuses his practice on criminal and civil litigation, appellate work and family law. He has experienced many years of success as both a criminal and civil trials lawyer. Mr. Meehan has helped countless clients and tried major cases.
Mr. Meehan has been involved in academia since 1976. He first taught as an adjunct associate professor of the paralegal program at Sacred Heart University for three years, lectured in criminal law at the Fairfield County Detective School between 1988 and 1989 and was an adjunct professor of law at Quinnipiac University between 1997 and 2000. Mr. Meehan continues to lecture at Fairfield University since 1988 as part of the Connecticut Trial Lawyers Association, People's Law School.
A community leader for decades, Mr. Meehan contributed throughout his formative years as an alderman for the city of Bridgeport, was a commissioner for the Bridgeport Airport Commission and the president for the Common Council of Bridgeport. From 1985 until 1992, he was a member of the North End Little League executive board in Bridgeport, manager of the Shelton American Little League, a varsity basketball coach for Shelton Catholic Regional Junior High School and the president and advisory board member the Catholic Family Services of Fairfield County. Mr. Meehan served as the vice president of the Shelton Flag Football League.
Mr. Meehan received a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Notre Dame in 1970, followed by a Juris Doctor with honors at the University of Connecticut in 1974. While pursuing a degree in law, he was active as a member of the University of Connecticut Law Review's editorial board and a research and special projects editor. A clerk for the Connecticut Supreme Court in Hartford for one year after college, he joined his father's firm in 1975. Mr. Meehan has since been admitted to practice by the Connecticut Bar Association, the U.S. District Court of Connecticut, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and the Supreme Court of the United States. Mr. Meehan is also a certified criminal trial specialist, certified pre-trial specialist and certified civil trial specialist through the National Board of Trial Advocacy.
Active in numerous professional societies, Mr. Meehan is a past president of the Bridgeport Bar Association, where he served as an executive committee member and chairman of the criminal law section. He is also a member and former chairman of the human trafficking committee of the Connecticut Bar Association and member of the anti-trafficking coalition of the International Academy of Trial Lawyers where he was named a fellow in 2011. Mr. Meehan is also a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and the American Board of Trial Advocates.
The recipient of many awards during his tenure, Mr. Meehan was honored with several Jurisprudence Awards and has been named to multiple legal directories, including The National Trial Lawyers, the International Academy of Trial Lawyers, the National Academy of Criminal Defense Lawyers, Super Lawyers and the American Institute of Personal Injury Lawyers. Furthermore, he has been an AV rated attorney through Martindale-Hubbell. A celebrated Marquis listee, Mr. Meehan has been showcased in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Law, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
