Ms. Madero dedicated her professional path to health care for more than 40 years. Beginning her career in 1957 at the Herrick Memorial Hospital in Berkeley, she contributed for six years as both a staff nurse on the medical-surgical ward and as the head nurse on the pediatric ward. Subsequently acquired by Kaiser-Permanente Medical Center in Oakland, where she spent the remainder of her career, Ms. Madero advanced from the position of a float nurse to working as a medical nurse practitioner in the department of medicine and then advanced to assistant director of nursing and then director of nursing practice and assistant medical group administrator until retiring in 1999.
While employed with Kaiser-Permanente, Ms. Madero taught an acupressure course for the department of medicine. What's more, she was responsible for establishing the first acupuncture clinic in Oakland. She also assisted the Veterans Administration in the successful opening of their clinic, as well as a hypertension clinic at Stamford. Ms. Madero has notably served as a guest lecturer for several organizations in her area of expertise and has authored and co-authored numerous articles in various peer-reviewed journals. Her most notable article, titled 'Kaiser-Permanente Experiment in Ambulatory Care,' was published in the 71st volume of the American Journal of Nursing in 1971.
Ms. Madero received a Bachelor of Science in nursing education at Holy Names University in 1973, followed by a Master of Arts in health systems at the University of San Francisco in 1987. She is a licensed nurse practitioner. Involved in her community, Ms. Madero was active with St. Ambrose Catholic Church as a member of the pastoral council. She also sings in the church choir, takes communion to the sick and homebound of the parish, and is a former member of Sigma Theta Tau.
