A retired historian and educator, Dr. Woodward celebrates a successful career that spanned more than 40 years. Beginning his career as an assistant professor at Wichita University and the University of Southwestern Louisiana, and as associate professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, as well as at several institutions in Guatemala, he embarked on a 20-year tenure with Tulane University as a full professor or history in 1970. During this time, Dr. Woodward excelled as the chairman of the history department, the director of the Tulane Summer in Central America program, and as professor-in-charge for the Tulane Junior Year Abroad in Paris.
Between 1999 and 2003, Dr. Woodward thrived at Texas Christian University as the Penrose Professor of Latin American Studies. He found further success as a Fulbright lecturer at the University of Chile, the University Catolica de Valparaiso in Chile and the University del Salvador in Buenos Aires, Argentina, between 1965 and 1968. He also flourished as a visiting professor at the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, NY, in 1989 and a Joe and Teresa Long professor of social studies at Tarleton State University in Stephenville, Texas, in 2007. Additionally, Dr. Woodward provided his expertise as a regional liaison officer for the Emergency Committee to Aid Latin American Scholars during 1974.
A prolific author, Dr. Woodward has penned 10 books, including "Class Privilege and Economic Development" in 1966, "Central America: A Nation Divided" in 1999, and "A Short History of Guatemala" in 2008. He was a contributing editor for "Handbook of Latin American Studies" between 1987 and 1990, a series editor for "World Bibliographical Series" between 1987 and 2000 and the section author on 'Central America, 1821-1870' in The Cambridge History of Latin America. Dr. Woodward also contributed his wealth of knowledge to approximately 60 peer-reviewed articles published in scholarly journals, one of which was published in the Hispanic American Historical Review and received special recognitions.
Dr. Woodward initially earned a bachelor's degree cum laude at Central College, now known as Central Methodist University, in 1955. He then served for three years in active duty with the U.S. Marines, ascending to the rank of captain between 1955 and 1958. Soon thereafter, Dr. Woodward obtained a Master of Arts in history in 1959 and a Doctor of Philosophy in history in 1962 at Tulane University.
Affiliated with numerous professional organizations throughout his career, Dr. Woodward is a past president of the Conference on Latin American History of the American Historical Association for which he participated on numerous committees. A past president and a former program chairman of the Southeastern Council of Latin American Studies, he is a member of the Geography and History Academy of Guatemala and the Latin America and Caribbean section of the Southern Historical Association as well. A celebrated Marquis listee, Mr. Woodward has been featured in approximately 45 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the Midwest and Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
Mr. Woodward was the recipient of several grants and fellowships from such organizations as the Henry L. and Grace Doherty Foundation, the American Philosophical Society and the Andrew Mellon Foundation, all of which enabled him to teach, travel and conduct extensive research across Central America, Latin America and Spain. During his career, he was presented with an Alfred B. Thomas Book Award from the Southeastern Council of Latin America Studies in 1994 and a Distinguished Service Award from the Conference of Latin American History in 2002. Likewise, Mr. Woodward was recognized as the Louisiana Humanist of the Year by the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities in 1995.
