Now retired as a commercial real estate attorney, Mr. Ritchie celebrates a storied career in the field that has spanned 35 successful years. Hired at Sidley & Austin in Chicago in 1964, he accepted the position of partner in 1972 and remained with the firm until his retirement in 1999. The aforementioned firm, which maintains offices in the commercial, financial and regulatory centers of the world, was founded more than 150 years ago, building a reputation for successfully representing clients on complex transactional, regulatory and litigation matters spanning a range of legal areas.
Working in real estate law not only provided Mr. Ritchie with the opportunity to work with various types of individuals and their unique goals, but it has also enabled him to lead a very diverse career. Notably, he has represented the developers of a 40-story office building in Chicago called One Financial Place. A challenging opportunity, it was a somewhat complex development that incorporated a commuter train that was built over a major highway as well as an underground parking lot, which was partially owned by the city.
A leader in several community and educational initiatives, Mr. Ritchie participated on the board of directors of the Erie Neighborhood House in Chicago and the United Charities of Chicago. He also excelled as a trustee of the University of Virginia Law School Foundation. Additionally active at his local church, Mr. Ritchie served as a captain in the U.S. Army.
An alumnus of the prestigious Yale University, Mr. Ritchie received a bachelor's degree, summa cum laude, in 1961. He subsequently earned a Bachelor of Laws at the University of Virginia in 1964. He has been admitted to practice law by the Illinois State Bar Association and the Tennessee Bar Association. Born in Virginia, Mr. Ritchie chose to follow a similar career path as his father, a graduate of the University of Virginia who flourished as a law school educator and dean of law schools at the University of Wisconsin and Northwestern University.
During his illustrious career, Mr. Ritchie was affiliated with several industry-related organizations, including the American Bar Association, the American College of Real Estate Lawyers and the Chicago Legal Aid Society. The past president of the Legal Club of Chicago, he was a past president, a past vice president and a lifetime member of the University of Virginia Law School Alumni Association. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Ritchie has been showcased in more than 45 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Law and Who's Who in the World.
