Dr. Steven Jonas holds the distinction of being a professor emeritus of preventive medicine and public health with more than 50 years of distinguished service in his field.

Dr. Jonas holds the distinction of being a professor emeritus of public health with more than 55 years of distinguished service in his field. He began his career by attending Columbia College, graduating cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in 1958. He earned a Doctor of Medicine from Harvard University in 1962, after which he attended Yale University, from which he obtained a Master of Public Health in 1967. He considers public health to have been the perfect specialty for his strengths, and credits his interest in the specialization to mentorship from professors David Rutstein and E. Richard Weinerman. Dr. Jonas concluded his education in 1997, graduating with a Master of Science from the Wagner School at New York University.
From 1969 to 1971, Dr. Jonas was the director of the department of social medicine at Morrisania City Hospital in the Bronx, N.Y. and was an assistant professor at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Jonas joined the Stony Brook University School of Medicine, Department of Preventive Medicine, as an assistant professor in 1971, advancing to the position of a professor of preventive medicine in 1983. With the opening at the University of the graduate program of public health in 2004, he became a professor in that program as well. He was granted professor emeritus status upon his retirement from the University in 2014.
Among his other academic achievements, Dr. Jonas served in the Columbia University School of Architecture Program in Health Services Planning and Design, as a Visiting, then Adjunct Associate Professor, 1977-79; at the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine, Fort Worth, TX, Department of Medical Education, as an Adjunct Associate Professor, 1980-85, and at Touro Law Center, Huntington, NY, as an Adjunct Professor of Legal Education, 1998-2005.
He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Preventive Medicine/¬Public Health; a Fellow of the American Public Health Association, the American College of Preventive Medicine, the New York Academy of Medicine, the New York Academy of Sciences, the American Public Health Association, and the Royal Society of Medicine (UK). He is a member of the Mensa Society.
Among his awards are: the Founders' Medal for Contributions to Medical Education, Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine; the Duncan Clark Career Achievement Award, Association for Prevention Teaching and Research (formerly Association of Teachers of Preventive Medicine); the Faculty Recognition Award of the Graduate Program in Public Health, Stony Brook University; the Yale School of Public Health, Distinguished Alumni Award; the Certificate of Recognition for Outstanding Service, United University Professions, Health Science Center Chapter; Stony Brook University; the Certificate of Appreciation; and from the American Medical Athletics Association Journal, for service as Editor-in-Chief, 2003-2015.
He has contributed more than 125 articles to professional journals, and has contributed to numerous websites and publications for triathletes.
