Practicing internationally for 40 years in the engineering, geology, science and environmental fields, Dr. Bo has worked throughout the Far East, Pacific, Europe and North America, beginning with the Ministry of Agriculture and Forests' irrigation department in Yangon, Myanmar, as an assistant engineering geologist between 1979 and 1990. He later held various geotechnical engineering positions in Singapore and England before becoming the technical director at Faber Maunsell AECOM Ltd, UK in 2005, and the principal then senior principal and Senior Vice President of DST Consultant Engineers, Inc., Canada in 2007. Dr. Bo has likewise found success as the president and chief operating officer of Sarafinchin Associates Ltd. in 2016.
A geotechnical designer for many award-wining projects, Dr. Bo has enjoyed the opportunity to work for several large companies on various high-profile projects and has managed several multi-billion-dollar projects around the world. He taught in the classroom as an adjunct professor at Lakehead University in Ontario, Canada, as well as supervising research students at several other institutions, including York University in Ontario, Canada and Swinburne University of Technology in Australia. He had also been active on various board of directors, including for DST Group, Canadian Geotechnical Society, the North America Burmese Engineers Association since 2012 and as a committee member of the Geotechnical Research Board of Canada, Canadian Geotechnical Society, since 2009. Additionally, Dr. Bo has delivered several keynote lectures.
A prolific author, Dr. Bo has contributed close to 200 referred international journal articles and referred conference papers and has been cited more than 3,400 times in international referred journals and textbooks. He published four textbooks, including "Laboratory Testing of Soils, Rocks and Aggregate" in 2011 and "Compressibility of Ultra-Soft Soil" in 2008, and five books chapters. Moreover, Dr. Bo has been an editor for several peer reviewed journals, such as the American Journal of Material, the Journal of Environmental Geotechnics and the Geotechnical Research Journal.
Dr. Bo first received a Bachelor of Science in geology at Rangoon University in Burma in 1977. He later achieved a postgraduate diploma in hydrogeology at the University College of London, UK in 1987 and a Master of Science in hydrogeology at the University of London, UK in 1987, followed by a Doctor of Philosophy in civil engineering at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore in 2002. Dr. Bo has multiple engineering and geology certifications and recently became a chartered manager through the Chartered Management Institute in 2015 and certified in executive management and leadership through Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA in 2015.
An elected fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers and Geological Society of London, UK, Dr. Bo is also a member and former technical committee member of the International Geosynthetics Society. He is a member of the soil and rock committee of the American Society of Materials Testing, and a technical committee member of the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering. Owing to his inimitable expertise in the field, Dr. Bo has received several research grants from the Australian Research Council and the National Research Council of Canada. He was likewise honored with a Telford Premium Award for best published paper in the International Journal of Ground Improvement in 2009 and was a finalist for several other awards.
