In his role, he is responsible for developing methods that infer compact time-predictive theories based on data from experiments and simulations, with applications in physics and other fields whose theories are falsifiable. He formerly served as visiting faculty of computational science in the division of physics, mathematics and astronomy between 2010 and 2015 and was the executive director of Caltech's Center for Advanced Computing Research between 2004 and 2013, a laboratory designed for computational science and data-intensive science research and practice.
Dr. Stalzer began his career in 1981 with Trace Instruments as a principal engineer and manager of software engineering. He was subsequently hired by Merrill Lynch as a consultant and senior developer for the company's risk analysis and management system used by the global equity derivatives group. Joining Hughes Research Laboratories (HRL) in 1991, he served as a computational scientist where he led a shared computer science research laboratory until 2004. In this role he worked often with HRL's board members from Hughes, Raytheon, GM and Boeing. Dr. Stalzer distinguished himself as the fellow of data science at the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation for three years, beginning in 2013. The foundation notably supports scientific discovery, environmental conservation, patient care improvements and preservation of the character of the Bay Area.
Dr. Stalzer was a principal investigator on a program that was used to design the shape of aircraft, which he found extremely satisfying and led to many more successful ventures. An inventor in his field, he currently holds five U.S. patents. Widely published as a result of his research, Dr. Stalzer has contributed several dozen articles to various scientific journals and conference papers as author/co-author.
An alumnus of California State University, Dr. Stalzer received a Bachelor of Science in mathematical physics and computer science in 1984. He subsequently entered the University of Southern California where he earned both a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in computer science in 1988 and 1993, respectively. To remain well versed in his field, Dr. Stalzer is an elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a member and distinguished scientist of the Association for Computing Machinery. He is also a member of Sigma Xi. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Stalzer has been featured in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering and Who's Who in the West.
