Founded by his grandfather in 1909, the operation welcomed him as part of the third generation to enter the business. Mr. Johnson brought his expertise as a licensed electrical engineer, which proved to be a game-changer as the operation strived to modernize.
During the 1960s, Mr. Johnson, along with his two brothers, initiated the largest expansion in the company's history, mechanizing the lumber yard and boosting overall efficiency to produce a higher quality product with minimal waste. These cutting-edge advancements attracted the attention of the nation's leaders in the lumber industry, who often traveled to Michigan to witness, first-hand, the streamlined manufacturing processes that he helped pioneer. His many contributions and astute business sense distinguished Mr. Johnson as a natural choice to lead the enterprise.
In 1970, Mr. Johnson was appointed as the president of L.L. Johnson, helming the company for the next decade. Upon concluding his tenure, he continued serving his family's legacy as the chairman of the board from 1980 to 1996. Prior to his association with the business, he pursued an education through coursework at Albion College from 1949 to 1951. Mr. Johnson subsequently earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the College of Business at Ferris State University in 1952.
As a committed member of his community, Mr. Johnson carried out various civic duties throughout his career, including as the president of the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce and the Charlotte Rotary Club, which honored him in 1986 with a Distinguished Service Award. He was also the recipient of the Charlotte Community Cornerstone Award in 1995 and enjoyed an affiliation with Shriners International. Previously, Mr. Johnson appeared in multiple editions of Who's Who in Finance and Industry.
