Backed by a wide range of expertise in land surveying and engineering, Mr. Carpenter had been the president of Carpenter Associates in Galway since 1973 until his retirement in 1994. He was a student at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy from 1951 to 1958 and is a certified engineering technician and a licensed land surveyor of over 50 years. Additionally, Mr. Carpenter served for six years with the U.S. Army Reserves.
Prior to his role at Carpenter Associates, Mr. Carpenter worked as the deputy director of the Saratoga County Real Property Tax from 1971 to 1973 and the deputy director of the Saratoga County Planning Board from 1966 until 1971. Between 1964 and 1966, he garnered a laudable reputation as the office manager of Coulter McCormack Surveyors and from 1962 to 1964 was a computer programmer at Rist-Frost Associates. Additionally, Mr. Carpenter maintained activity as a highway designer at J. Clarkeson Consultant Engineer from 1957 to 1962 and a designer in the medium motors department at General Electric in Schenectady from 1955 to 1957.

Mr. Carpenter was the recipient of the Award of Merit from the Federation of Historical Services in 1988.
Having always harbored an interest in engineering, Mr. Carpenter initially entered his profession due to the influence of fellow congregants at his church who ran their own engineering and surveying businesses. Upon learning that they were hiring engineering students for summer jobs, he eagerly accepted a position. Believing he was born to be a historian and opining that the very land itself tells a story, Mr. Carpenter is a member of the New York State Association of Professional Land Surveyors, the Eastern New York Society of Land Surveyors, Lodges: Lions, the Schenectady County Historical Society, the Galway Preservation Society, the Butternut Valley Tractor Club and the Tri-State Antique Tractor Club.
