She initially pursued an education at Kansas University, majoring in political science and graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in 1952. As a teenager, she knew a successful husband and wife legal team, and their ability to live and work together harmoniously was an inspiration to her. Ms. Burns concluded her studies at Kansas University in 1954 upon earning her Bachelor of Laws.
From 1955 to 1961, Ms. Burns found success as a county attorney in Osage County, Kansas. Since 1954, she has excelled as an attorney for the practice of Burns, Burns, Walsh, & Walsh. In 1961, she was appointed as a municipal judge presiding over Osage City, Kansas, where she continues to serve to this day. Moreover, Ms. Burns ran as a Republican candidate for the representative of the 17th District of the Kansas State Senate in 1984, an experience she considers a career highlight.
Ms. Burns is a former president of the Lincoln Day Club of Independence, Kansas, which she fondly recalls as one of the honors of her career. During this time, she organized events and celebrations attended by such conservative luminaries as Ronald Reagan, among others. The president of the school board of UN District 421 of Lyndon, Kansas, she is a co-owner of the Lyndon Bank of Lyndon, Kansas. Furthermore, she has represented cases before the Kansas State Supreme Court, and is proud to have conducted a significant amount of pro bono work throughout the course of her career. Among other accolades, Ms. Burns is the notable recipient of a Distinguished Service Judges' Award from Osage County, Kansas.
