Dr. Emanuel J. Mickel was honored with professor emeritus status in 2015.

Dr. Mickel bears the distinguished title of a professor emeritus of Indiana University, with more than 50 years of distinction in his field. Inspired by his high school Latin and history teacher, he developed an early interest in entering academia. He attended Louisiana State University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1959, and the University of North Carolina, where he completed a Master of Arts in 1961. Between 1963 and 1965, Dr. Mickel served his country to the rank of a captain in the U.S. Army. Dr. Mickel returned to the University of North Carolina in 1965, where he concluded his academic efforts by completing a Doctor of Philosophy.
During the same year, Dr. Mickel became an assistant professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, rising to an associate professor between 1967 and 1968. He joined Indiana University Bloomington, in 1968, serving as an associate professor until 1973, and a professor from 1973 to 2015. Dr. Mickel was the director of the school's Medieval Studies Institute from 1976 until 1991. Between 1984 and 1995, and again from 2009 to 2015, he was the chairman of Indiana University's department of French and Italian. Dr. Mickel was honored with professor emeritus status in 2015.
Dr. Mickel is the author of "Les Enfances Godefroi and Le Retour de Cornumarant" in 1999, "Ganelon, Treason, and the 'Chanson de Roland'" in 1989, and "Eugene Fromentin" in 1982. He is a consultant for the National Endowment of the Humanities, and has been a visiting scholar at Pembroke College and the University of Cambridge. Dr. Mickel is an Officier of L'Ordre des Palmes Académiques, and a former Lilly Open Fellow, as well as a grantee of the National Endowment of the Humanities. In his retirement, Dr. Mickel enjoys music, theater, and the continued study of ancient literature.
