Dr. Woolam is a general surgeon who recently retired from medicine in 2017, having served as the chief medical officer at Southwest Life and Health/Firstcare after 10 years within the organization. He also contributed for 42 years as a clinical professor at Texas Tech University School of Medicine between 1975 and 2017, where he notably worked as an interim chairman in the department of surgery for one year, and two previous years as an associate clinical professor. Additionally, Dr. Woolam excelled as a general surgeon in Lubbock between 1968 and 2017.
A community leader early on in his career, Dr. Woolam first served on the board of directors of the Community Concert Association of Lubbock from 1968 to 1974. He was later a trustee of the West Texas Foundation and a member of the board of directors of the South Plains Heath Systems. Dr. Woolam served on the board of directors of the First United Methodist Church in Lubbock from 1970 to 1974.
A native of Texas, Dr. Woolam attended college locally, receiving a Bachelor of Arts at Texas Tech University in 1958. He shortly thereafter acquired a Doctor of Medicine at Baylor University in 1962. Additional educational pursuits to his credit include an internship at Parkland Memorial Hospital and a residency in general surgery at the Mayo Clinic, as well as the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine at the University of Minnesota as the chief resident associate in surgery. Dr. Woolam is likewise a diplomate of the American Board of Surgery.
An elected fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Dr. Woolam is a member of numerous industry-related organizations. He served as the president the Lubbock Surgical Society, the Joseph Priestley Society, the Lubbock-Crosby-Garza County Medical Society, the American Heart Association as the Lubbock County division president and the American Cancer Society as both the national president and as the Lubbuck unit president. Dr. Woolam especially enjoyed his time as the national president of the American Cancer Society, primarily because he was able to instill the importance of cancer screenings and prevention and support many of the society's research activities. Among other organizations, he is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Texas Surgical Society and the Society for Surgical Oncology. For his outstanding accomplishments, Dr. Woolam was named Outstanding Clinical Professor in 1977 and Distinguished Alumnus in 2000 by Texas Tech University.
