STILLWATER, OK, December 19, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Dr. Ulrich Melcher with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Melcher celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Dr. Melcher is a biochemistry educator marking more than 45 years of distinction in his field. He became interested in biochemistry after realizing his talent for chemistry, despite his initial disinterest in the subject, and a passion for biology. He happened upon the field while trying to merge the two disciplines. Attending the University of Chicago, he graduated in 1965 with a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry. In 1970, Dr. Melcher earned a Doctor of Philosophy in biochemistry from Michigan State University.
His Ph.D. research dissertation concerned the biochemistry of protein synthesis. His research was continued, supported by a NATO Fellowship, to study at the University of Aarhus in Denmark where Dr. Melcher studied the purification of target-specific messenger RNA. He next went to New York University Medical School, characterizing signaling antibodies on cell surfaces that trigger immune responses, a study continued at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas (1974-5). In this position, he began characterization of the mouse equivalent of human immunoglobulinD (IgD). Once established at Oklahoma State University, Dr. Melcher began the laboratory's study of plant viruses with support of NSF-EPSCoR. This led to collaboration (and a visit) to the Institut Pasteur in Strasbourg, France (1970) and description of the genomes of multiple plant viruses.
Dr. Melcher joined Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, Oklahoma, in 1975 as an assistant professor of biochemistry, rising to the position of an associate professor in 1978 and a professor in 1983. Since 2008, Dr. Melcher has garnered a laudable reputation as a Sirny, and later, Regents professor at the university. He has been named a Fellow of the American Society of Plant Pathology, a Fulbright scholar, working at the Laboratory of Plant Virology at the Institute of Cellular and Molecular Biology, Strasbourg, France, as well as a North Atlantic Treaty Organization Postdoctoral Fellow and a National Institute of Health Postdoctoral Fellow. Dr. Melcher's research on plant virology led to the identification of proteins that influenced his later work. Further, he is a member of the American Association of University Professors, the American Society for Microbiology, and the American Phytopathological Society.
Dr. Melcher, in addition to providing financial support to the universities with which he has been associated, has supported charitable efforts, such as Doctors Without Borders, United Nations High Commission on Refugees, FINCA, International Rescue Committee, CARE, The Nature Conservancy, local United Ways, American Civil Liberties Union, NAACP, Southern Poverty Law Center, the Union of Concerned Scientists, the National Center for Science Education, the Brady Campaign, and the American Foundation for the Blind, among others. Dr. Melcher encourages you, the reader, to make similar donations to these or other similar organizations.
