Dr. Du Bois is renowned as a pediatric surgeon and educator with more than 35 years of innovation in his discipline and service to his patients. He initially fostered an interest in medicine after his own experiences as a patient with a complex appendicitis case that took doctors several painful days to diagnose. Thinking that there must be an easier way to diagnose and treat surgical problems in children, Dr. Du Bois focused on pediatric surgery.
Leaving home at the age of 17, Dr. Du Bois paid his own way through community college, accepted a transfer to the University of California, and pursued further studies in medical school. Subsequently, he earned a Doctor of Medicine from the Uniformed Services University in Bethesda, MD, in 1983. From 1983 to 1990, Dr. Du Bois completed residencies in surgery and pediatric surgery at the David Grant United States Air Force Medical Center and Baylor College of Medicine.
In 1990, Dr. Du Bois began his career as the Chief of Pediatric Surgery and the Director of Pediatric Surgical Critical Care at David Grant United States Air Force Medical Center, where he remained until 1999. He later worked as an active member of staff and Clinical Professor of Surgery at the University of California Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, Mercy San Juan Hospital, and Mercy General Hospital before obtaining the post of the Chief of Children's Surgical Services for Kaiser Permanente Medical Center of Roseville.
Dr. Du Bois is proud to have been the first pediatric surgeon at the Kaiser Permanente Sacramento/Roseville facilities, as well as his efforts to elevate pediatric patient care and staff education during his 16 years with the aforementioned medical center. Following his retirement from Kaiser Permanente, he remains in academia as a Visiting Professor at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Notably, he is a retired lieutenant colonel in the United States Air Force, having served on active duty from 1983 to 1999, and the Air Force Reserves until 2005. Likewise, Dr. Du Bois is a diplomate of the American Board of Surgery with sub-specialties in pediatric surgery and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
