Ms. Hammon is currently a senior exercise instructor for the Arthritis Foundation. She also enjoys volunteering with the sheriff's department in rural Orange County, providing wellness visits to seniors who are home alone; she also takes food to them on Wednesdays. Previously she served as a family support coordinator for the Brain Injury Association of North Carolina in Raleigh, NC for 22 years. Her first position out of graduate school was teaching in the prisons. She taught adult basic education, reading, writing, math, and how to get a job and keep it. She still reminisces about that job because it was special. As she explains it, "Reaching out to folks with special needs, whether it is a prisoner or an individual with mental retardation or developmental disabilities touches my heart." She was able to integrate her church beliefs by being actively involved in contributing to making the world better. Ms. Hammon also served as an instructor at Wake Technical Community College in Raleigh, was a curator for the Joel Lane Historic House, and was the longtime owner and manager of College Exxon between 1978 and 1992.
Earning a Bachelor of Arts in sociology in 1973 and a Master of Education in guidance and personnel services in 1976 at North Carolina State University, Ms. Hammon was certified as an elementary school counselor. Furthermore, she is a former member of North Carolina's Medical Traumatic Brain Injury Research Council's advisory council, and was active with the North Carolina TBI Task Force during 2003. She also spent many years volunteering with Seniors and Lawmen Together and Meals on Wheels. Ms. Hammon served on the Life Experiences board in Cary, NC for about ten years.
She sings with Voices, the Chapel Hill Chorus. They travel all over the world, and have sung in Scotland, Ireland, Czech Republic and Italy.
Born in Rocky Mountain, NC, she enjoys living in Chapel Hill, which has UNC Chapel Hill and Duke University close by, so it is a dynamic county. Ms. Hammon was married to Gordon Lee Hammon from 1978 until his passing 13 years later. She is the proud mother of three children. Her first grandchild attends the University of Arizona. Ms. Hammon has been highlighted in Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who of American Women. She was named Outstanding Citizen and Leader in "Business Leader Magazine" in Raleigh for 1996-1997.
