Richard Allen Avner Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

    CHAMPAIGN, IL, December 24, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Richard Allen Avner with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Mr. Avner celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. Mr. Avner has held numerous roles in scientific research, beginning his career in 1955 as an engineering aide at the U.S. Naval Ordnance Laboratory. Mr. Avner obtained a Bachelor of Science in applied psychology at the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1961 and a Master of Arts in experimental psychology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1964. In the early 1960s he held positions as Research Assistant and Research Associate at the University of Illinois Bureau of Educational Research and in the Research Group of the University of Illinois Committee for School Mathematics.

Following active-duty service in the U.S. Army from 1964 to 1966 as chief of the experimental psychology branch of the U.S. Army Aeromedical Research Unit, he returned to the University of Illinois to join its Computer-based Education Research Laboratory (CERL) in 1967, where he directed its internal evaluation program. In 1973, while at CERL, he began a part-time consulting firm (Avner Associates), served until 1975 in the U.S. Army reserves as an ADP plans and operations officer for the U.S. Army Medical R&D Command, served from 1983 to 1993 as editor of the peer-reviewed Journal of Computer-Based Instruction, was on the review boards for other scholarly journals and on review panels for government and private funding agencies. During this period he was author or co-author of numerous book chapters, computer software packages, and articles in professional journals. With the closing of CERL in 1993, Mr. Avner retired from the University of Illinois with the continuing rank of principal research scientist, emeritus.

Avner Associates was in operation until 2013 when volunteer civic activities became Mr. Avner's major focus. For the past six years. Mr. Avner has dedicated his free time to pro bono design, production and maintenance of custom membership databases for non-profit organizations.

In the past he has been affiliated with the American Psychological Association, the American Educational Research Association, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers. He has served as a member of the board of directors of ADCIS (the Association for the Development of Computer-Based Instructional Systems) and, in the Champaign-Urbana, Illinois community, as an officer or member of the boards/advisory panels of Sinai Temple, B'nai B'rith, the Champaign-Urbana Jewish Endowment Foundation, the University of Illinois Library Friends, Natural History Museum, Spurlock Museum, and Office for Mathematics, Science, and Technology Education.

Mr. Avner maintains membership in the National Genealogical Society, the Champaign County Genealogical Society, numerous other regional genealogical societies, the Sons and Daughters of Veterans of World War II, the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, the American Legion, and the Jewish War Veterans of the U.S.A. He is currently a member of the University of Illinois Foundation, the University of Illinois President's Council and is on the boards of the Funeral Consumers Alliance of Champaign County and the Champaign-Urbana Jewish Federation.

In 1986 Mr. Avner was elected to be a Fellow of ADCIS. In 1990 he was the first recipient of an annual award from ADCIS named in his honor - the Allen Avner Award for Excellence in CBI Research and Scholarship. In 1992 he received the ADCIS Joan Lauer Hayes Award for Distinguished Service. In 2006 he received the John D. Schmale. MD. Award for Individual Contributions by the Community Blood Services of Illinois. Mr. Avner has been featured in the 29th edition of Who's Who in Finance and Industry.
