Mr. Murphy is a retired aviation instructor who taught at Everett Community College for more than 30 years before retiring in 2015. A well-respected member of the faculty, he was known for his innate ability to explain the operations inherent in keeping aircraft air worthy. During his tenure, he taught various aircraft mechanics courses and was responsible for initiating an advanced composite program. He also had the opportunity to work on many different projects, including the updating of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approved CFR Part 147 AMT program and writing of FAA-approved training programs that were offered at the college. Additionally, Mr. Murphy initiated a very successful standalone composite program, which trained many students on the necessary skills for the Puget Sound area of Washington.
Prior to his tenure at the Everett campus, Mr. Murphy briefly taught at Lane Community College in Eugene, Oregon, and the Pittsburgh Institute of Technology. He was also the director of maintenance of atmospheric aircraft at the University of Washington in Everett for more than 20 years, conducted off-site teachings for Seattle College Systems and lectured often in his area of expertise. Mr. Murphy provided close to a decade in the field as well, particularly as a shop manager at Beech Airo and Cessna Aircraft Sales, the chief mechanic at Loma Linda University and an aircraft mechanic at Frakes Aviation.
Presently, Mr. Murphy is the chief inspector at Cannon Aircraft Interiors, an FAA Part 145 repair station in Paine Field. In this role, he inspects all interior work, gives aircraft pre-inspections, and documents and repairs any hidden damage. Mr. Murphy is the owner of his own consulting business, Pat's Aviation Consulting and has been the primary consultant for LASTIC, Inc. in Seattle since 1986.
Born in Walla Walla, Washington, but raised in Alaska, Mr. Murphy's parents were missionaries. During his childhood, the only way to get around was by airplane. Growing up, he wanted to become a pilot, but his eyesight did not meet the necessary criteria. Instead, he chose to study the mechanics of the airplanes. Mr. Murphy received a Bachelor of Science in industrial technology and vocational education for aircraft mechanics at Pacific Union College in 1977, followed by a Master of Engineering in vocation education for aircraft mechanics at the University of Pittsburgh in 1978. He holds certifications in composite manufacture and repair, is a licensed aviation maintenance technician and is certified in level one ultrasonic testing.
In his free time, Mr. Murphy is active as a member of the Christian Motorcycle Association. He is also an amateur photographer and author. His black and white photo show notably received first place during a competition in 1975. He also wrote a training film called "Sand Castings" in 1977. Involved in his community, Mr. Murphy has most notably contributed prolifically as a volunteer with the Salvation Army. To raise money for the organization, he has often made many appearances as a volunteer Santa Claus.
