Growing up in Eveleth, an iron mining area of Minnesota, Mr. Phillips has always loved the atmosphere as well as the determination of the miners. In the culture known as "Iron Rangers," he wanted to do whatever he could to help the economy in the region through his present post. In addition to his notable role, Mr. Phillips has flourished as a board member for the University of Minnesota Duluth Labovitz School of Business and Economics and the Northland Foundation.
Prior to his current positions, Mr. Phillips served as the Commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development from 2011 to 2012 and the economic development commission of Oakdale from 2008 to 2011. Previously, he excelled as the director of business development at the Kraus-Anderson Construction Company between 2005 and 2015. Additionally, Mr. Phillips has found success as the president of Mark R. Phillips Management Consulting, the vice president of Northeast Ventures/Iron Range Ventures, the director of corporate relations at Minnesota Power and an accountant at USS Great Lake Fleet.
Mr. Phillips is a member of the Economic Development Association of Minnesota, the Arrowhead Growth Alliance, the University of Minnesota Center for Transportation Studies, the Minnesota Construction Association, the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce and the University Alumni Association. Furthermore, he has worked on the advisory board for the University of Minnesota Duluth Labovitz School of Business and Economics. Renowned as someone who will always do the right thing regardless of what is popular, he was presented with the Career Achievement Award from the Economic Development of Minnesota.
