Sudershan Kumar Mathavan is the principal engineer of Florida Power and Light Company.

The principal engineer of Florida Power and Light Company since 1979, Dr. Mathavan began his professional career as an engineer for Ground Support Engineering, in Miami, between 1969 and 1973. He proceeded to serve as an engineer at Smith, Korach A/E for two years before becoming a consultant engineer at the University of Miami from 1975 to 1977. Dr. Mathavan subsequently joined Duke Power of Charlotte, North Carolina, as a senior engineer from 1977 until 1979.
For the past 40 years, Dr. Mathavan has made significant safety contributions to the operations of nuclear power plants. In a career suffused with highlights, he is proudest of his contributions toward promoting clean energy, solar energy and reactor safety, specifically while employed at the Saint Lucie and Turkey Point plants. Dr. Mathavan is likewise gratified to have founded a nonprofit, the Mathavan Foundation, in order to promote education in India and the United States. In India he founded the Lobona Education Trust in 1985, which focuses on financial aid for widows.
Dr. Mathavan received a Bachelor of Engineering from Regional Engineering College in Srinagar, India in 1967. In order to continue his studies, he immigrated to the United States in 1968 and graduated with a Master of Science from the University of Miami in 1970. In 1977, he obtained a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Miami. Throughout the years of his education and career, Dr. Mathavan owes a debt of gratitude for the mentorship of his father and Nejat Veziroglu, who sponsored him for his immigration to the United States, and for always encouraging and inspiring him.
From an early age, Dr. Mathavan excelled as a student and artist – upon the advice of his father, who told him that a good artist could also make for an excellent engineer, he focused his career aspirations appropriately. His father, a tailor, originally hailed from Pakistan but migrated to India later in life. Once political turmoil overcame Pakistan and India, he and his family settled in the Indian portion of Kashmir. Living through these dangerous times imbued Dr. Mathavan with an even greater drive toward succeeding in his career, so that he might realize a more stable life. Once he had immigrated to Miami, he focused on aircraft ground support engineering, leading him to his future job opportunities around the city.
Dr. Mathavan is a member of the American Nuclear Society, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and previously the Analysis Subcommittee of Westinghouse Owners Group. He served as the president of the India Society of Miami from 1984 to 1986, a secretary of the Hindu Temple in Fort Lauderdale in 1986 and is the founder of Gurudwara Treasure Coast. In 1985 Dr. Mathavan was awarded for his work within the quality improvement program by the Florida Power and Light Company. Adjacent to his career, he enjoys such diversions as bird watching, preaching Sikhism and walking.
