Dr. Shon has accrued more than 30 years of inimitable experience as a professor of orthopedics at the Korea University, College of Medicine, in which he was appointed in 1986. In addition to his position as an educator, Dr. Shon is a distinguished surgeon and general orthopedist. He has served as an officer in the South Korean Navy from 1983 to 1986 and an adviser to the South Korean government for the Korea Health Insurance Review & Assessment Service in the Korea Food and Drug Administration (now known as the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety) from 2004 to 2007. He has been on the (medical) Advisory Committee of the Anti-Corruption & Civil Rights Commission from 2008 to 2014, the Review Committee of the Korea Medical Association Indemnity Mutual Aid since 2008 and the Mutual Dispute Mediation Committee of the Ministry of Land Infrastructure and Transport since 2013.
Dr. Shon pursued his medical studies at Korea University, from which he earned a Doctor of Philosophy in medicine in 1987, a Master of Medicine in 1981 and a Bachelor of Medicine in 1978. He was trained in prestigious institutions around the world, including the Endoklink in Germany and the Institute for special Surgery in the U.S. He has followed his scholarly interest, serving as a translator for the book "Revision of Total Hip Arthroplasty" and contributing numerous articles to professional journals. Currently, he is the Honorary Director of the Bumin Hospital in Busan, South Korea.
An active member of critical organizations, such as the Korean Orthopaedic Association and the European Orthopaedic Research Society, Dr. Shon has contributed to promoting research and development in the field through interdisciplinary coordination, exchange of scientific and technical experience, and education. He served as President of the Korean Orthopedic Association in 2018-19 and Secretary and Treasurer in 1999. Also he was President of the Korean Musculoskeletal Tissue Transplantation Society in 2004, President of the Korean Hip Society in 2005, President of the International Society for Technology in Arthroplasty (ISTA) in 2008, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Korean Orthopedic Association and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Korean Association of Tissue Bank in 2013-4.
Dr. Shon has been happily married to his wife, Kae Jeoung Kang. Together they are the proud parents of their two daughters: Soomin Shon (MFA in Graphic Design, Yale University; BA in Art History and Economics, Cornell University; Diploma in Piano, Julliard School Pre-college) and Kelly WooJung Shon (AB in Sociology, Princeton University). Soomin is an artist and is a Part-time faculty at Parsons, The New School University and a Visiting Assistant Professor at Pratt Institute. Kelly has been a professional golfer at the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) for five years and is currently working in investor relations and business development at the Carlyle Group – Alpinvest. A practicing Buddhist, Dr. Shon enjoys mountain climbing and is an advocate of meditation.
