Mr. Belknap founded The Belknap Company, Ltd. in 1978 and, after forty-one years, still serves as President. The firm works as a real estate developer, consultant and manager. It developed over five thousand building lots in four states and served as an advisor to financial firms, including Hartford Insurance, Lazard Freres, First Union Bank and Bank of Boston. In 1992, The Company's Wilton's Corner was named "Project of the Year – Master Planned Community" by the National Association of Home Builders. Prior to starting The Belknap Company Ltd and its subsidiaries, he found success as an associate of Sullivan & Cromwell in New York City from 1967 to 1970, further becoming the assistant to the mayor and the director of Council on Environment with the Office of Mayor of New York, until 1972. He then became Vice President and Secretary of Corporate Property Investors and subsequently of Levitt & Sons.
Prior to embarking on his professional path, Mr. Belknap pursued a formal education from Harvard University and earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1963. Four years later, he received a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the renowned institution. Furthermore, as an English Speaking Union Scholar, he secured a Bachelor of Laws from Cambridge University in England. Mr. Belknap was later admitted to practice law in the State of New York in 1969.
From 1993 to 2008, Mr. Belknap served as an adjunct professor at Rutgers Law School (Newark) and Western New England College School of Law. He also wrote real estate articles for various publications, including contributions as a columnist for the Tri-State Real Estate Journal, 1992-1994 and authored a book "Paper Recycling: A Business Perspective", published in 1972. Among his public service activities, he served on the Board of the Berkshire National Council for twenty-six years, acting as Vice Chairman for nineteen years and as Chairman of the Board of Shakespeare and Company, Lenox, Massachusetts. Besides working as an assistant to Mayor Lindsay, he worked for the Democratic National Committee in the 1968 Humphrey/Muskie Campaign and served as a volunteer advisor to Congressmen Ed Koch, who later became the NYC Mayor. Mr. Belknap has been featured in several editions of Who's Who in Finance and Business, Who's Who in Finance and Industry, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in the World, and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders.
