Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Dr. Baer is now a professor emeritus in the department of atmospheric and oceanic science at the University of Maryland at College Park since 2002. During his 25-year tenure as professor, he directed the meteorology program, chaired the department of meteorology and initiated and directed the Cooperative Institute for Climate Studies. He originally taught at the Colorado State University beginning in 1961 as an assistant professor and one of the founding members of the department of atmospheric science in conjunction with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Dr. Baer subsequently became a professor at the University of Michigan in 1971 before joining the staff of the University of Maryland in 1977 to oversee the meteorology program.
Some of Dr. Baer's research efforts included topics of atmospheric dynamic, numerical weather prediction, numerical analysis, initialization, spectral methods, atmospheric energetics, gravity waves and high-performance computing applications. In more recent years, he assisted in the development of the spectral element method and its application to climate modeling. Dr. Baer notably developed spectral models, a two-dimensional scaling index, a nonlinear normal mode initialization, an optimization of grids for models, and more. His research has been supported by the National Science Foundation, the Department of Energy, the U.S. Department of Defense, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the NOAA.
While teaching, Dr. Baer had the opportunity to serve as a World Meteorological Organization expert at the Indian Meteorological Institute. He also served as a consultant for McGraw Hill and Science Applications International Corporation, was a visiting professor at several institutions, including Stockholm University and Freie University of Berlin, as well as a visiting research associate at Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory at Princeton University. Additionally, Dr. Baer was active on numerous professional boards and committees.
Outside of his commitments to the field, Dr. Baer twice served on the board of directors of the Washington Recorder Society between 1980 and 1984 and between 1991 and 2015. The goal of the society is to foster knowledge and appreciation of the recorder and its music, including the art, history, literature and uses of the recorder in the Washington, D.C. area. Dr. Baer has contributed over 90 scholarly articles in scientific journals. He also co-authored "Climate and Weather in the Tropics" in 1979 and edited "Climate in Human Perspective" in 1991.
An alumnus of the University of Chicago, Dr. Baer received a Bachelor of Arts, a Master of Arts in meteorology and Doctor of Philosophy in geophysical sciences in 1950, 1954 and 1961, respectively. Since these accomplishments, he has been a fellow and former president of the Denver chapter of the American Meteorological Society, a fellow and former chairman of section W of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a fellow of the Royal Meteorological Society. He is also a member of the American Geophysical Union. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Baer has been included in the 65th edition of Who's Who in America and the first edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
