With more than 50 years of experience to his credit, Dr. Carr has excelled at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL, as a professor since 1969 and the co-director of the Master of Product Design and Development Management Program since 2016. Previously, he held a number of positions with the aforementioned university, including an associate dean of engineering from 1993 to 2016 and the assistant dean of engineering from 1991 to 1993. Prior to these appointments, he served Northwestern University as the director of the Materials Research Center from 1984 to 1990.
Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Carr pursued an education at the University of Cincinnati, earning a Bachelor of Science in 1965. He continued his academic efforts with a Master of Science at Case Western Reserve University in 1967. He concluded his studies at Case Western Reserve University in 1970, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy. In addition to these accomplishments, Dr. Carr obtained his certification as a professional engineer in the state of Ohio.
Beyond his responsibilities within the field, Dr. Carr has participated in numerous endeavors outside of his professional circles. Active as an engineering consultant, he has contributed to the Saint Matthew Episcopal Church in Evanston. He has found much success with his written works as well, authoring sections of several books and myriad articles for such industry journals as JOM. Moreover, Dr. Carr remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise, including the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, SAE International, the Society of Plastics Engineers, the American Chemical Society, the American Physical Society, and the Materials Research Society.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Carr has accrued several accolades throughout his impressive career. Holding multiple patents in plastics and textiles, he is incredibly proud of his involvement on the steering committee for the Edison Awards. He has been notably presented with the Educational Service Award from the Plastics Institute of America in 1975, the Ralph A. Teetor Award from SAE International in 1980 and the Outstanding Alumni Achievement Award from the University of Cincinnati in 1993. Dr. Carr was further recognized as a fellow of the American Physical Society, the Society of Plastics Engineers and ASM International.
Growing up in Dayton, Ohio, Dr. Carr was initially interested in his field by his experiences at the Wright Air Force Base as a child, where his aunt had worked as a typist in the materials laboratory. Holding brief posts with General Motors during his collegiate pursuits, he became incredibly enthusiastic about the increasing utilization of plastic and rubber in the manufacturing of automobiles as well as educating the next generation of engineering professionals on polymers.
