Dr. Vigneswaran is a cardiothoracic surgeon and educator with more than 40 years of excellence in his specialty. Interested in a career in medicine since his early childhood, he was driven by a respect for the work doctors performed and the life-changing effects that medical treatment could have on patients with severe pathology. He attended the University of Sri Lanka, earning a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery degree in 1978. While studying as a medical student, Dr. Vigneswaran became attracted to the specific challenges of heart and lung physiology, and began to specialize in transplantation. He completed a Master of Business Administration from Concordia University in 2014.
From 1991 until 1993, Dr. Vigneswaran was an advanced cardiothoracic surgical fellow at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Between 1994 and 1998, he served as the director of general thoracic surgery and cardiothoracic transplants at the University of Illinois, as well as the chief of cardiothoracic surgery at the Westside VA Medical Center. Dr. Vigneswaran distinguished himself as a member of staff at the Hines VA Medical Center in Chicago, and the chief of thoracic surgery and lung transplants at Loyola University Medical Center from 1998 to 2005. From 2006 to 2016, he was the associate chief of heart and lung transplant, cardiac, and thoracic surgeries for the University of Chicago Hospitals, and a professor of surgery at the University of Chicago. Since 2016, he serves as the Professor and Director of Thoracic Surgery at Loyola University Health System and System Director of Edward and Elmhurst Health.
Dr. Vigneswaran is a frequent contributor to professional journals including Thorax, the Journal of Clinical Transplantation, and the Journal of Cardiovascular Surgery. Among other accolades, he was the recipient of a 1993 Young Investigator Award from DuPont Pharmacy, and has been named one of the top surgeons in the United States by the Consumer Research Council of America. Dr. Vigneswaran is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and a past president of the International College of Surgeons.
